Reliability, problems and repair of the BMW M43B16 engine
The next 1.6-liter BMW engine of the M43 family (it includes M43B18 and M43B19), which replaced the M40B16, was developed on the basis of the 1.8-liter M43B18, which introduced a crankshaft with a reduced piston stroke to 72 mm (was 81 mm). Compared to its predecessor, the new power unit received a lightweight crankshaft, other pistons with increased to 9.7 compression ratio, as well as connecting rods with a length of 145 mm.
The cylinder head, despite the previous design with a single camshaft, has undergone major changes. The belt drive timing gave way to a reliable chain, which replacement is required after ~300 thousand kilometers. In addition, lightweight valves and new springs, rockers of a different design have been used, and hydrocompensators of valve clearances have been retained. The diameter of inlet valves is 42 mm, exhaust valves 36 mm. Characteristics of the camshaft M43B16: phase 244/244, lift 10.6/10 mm.
The ignition system has been changed and a variable length DISA manifold is used to optimize the inlet characteristic of the engine.
This motor was used on BMW cars with the index 16i.
Since 2001, a new engine for 16 BMWs – N42B18, which within a year completely replaced the M43B16.
Problems and disadvantages of BMW engines M43B16
The inline four of the M43 family (it included the M43B16, M43B18 and M43B19), which came out in 1992 as a replacement for the M40B18. The M43 cylinder block was almost unchanged from the M40, the crankshaft now has 4 counterweights (the M40 had 8) and lost a little weight, the stroke remained unchanged. In addition to the crankshaft, the pistons have changed, and the compression ratio has been increased to 9.7.
The cylinder head was significantly changed for chain drive timing (there was a belt), the chain serves about 300 thousand kilometers. The camshaft is the same (SOHC 8V), changed rockers, lightened valves, different springs, nowhere went hydrocompensators. Also on the M43B16 was used intake manifold with adjustable length DISA, which allowed to increase torque at both low and high speeds. The ignition system has also undergone changes.
