Reliability, problems and repairs of the BMW M54B22 engine
The younger engine M54 series (which still included M54B25<, M54B30 and S54B32), is an evolution of the M52TUB20, in which the crankshaft was replaced with a new, cast-iron crankshaft with a stroke of 72 mm (previously was 66 mm), lightweight pistons, modified forged connecting rods 145 mm, the cylinder block remained the old, aluminum with cast-iron liners, from the M52TU.
The cylinder head is similar to the M52TU with Double VANOS, the Dees intake manifold was changed, now it is somewhat shorter with larger channels, the control system was replaced by Siemens MS43 and Siemens MS45 (Siemens MS45.1 for US), an electronic throttle with a diameter of 62 mm was used.
This motor was used in BMW cars with the index 20i.
The M54B22 engine was used by the Bavarians until 2006, after which it was discontinued and replaced by the four-cylinder N43B20. In the new N52 series of inline sixes, which replaced the M54, the low-volume unit was no longer available.
BMW M54B22 engine tuning
Stroker 2.6L
The first logical step in tweaking the small 2.2-liter M54 engine, is to increase the displacement. Increase is easiest by buying a crankshaft and connecting rods from M54B30, pistons remain factory, buy a thick cylinder-head gasket and tuned brains from M54B25. All fiddling will give about 20 hp and this increase will be quite noticeable.
M54B22 Turbo
The turbocharging of this motor is similar to the M52B20. In addition, on sale there are compressor kits from ESS, providing 250+ hp on the stock piston, but the cost of such solutions is quite high.
To put it nicely, it is easier for the owner of a car with M54B22 engine to buy M54B30 engine for swap, or another BMW.
