Design and repair of BMW M57D25 engine

BMW M57D25 Engine

This 2.5-liter engine was created on the basis of the 3-liter M57D30 by bringing its geometry to the parameters of the M51. The cylinder block is cast iron with a cylinder bore of 80 mm, a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 82.8 mm, connecting rods are 137.6 mm long, and the compression height of the pistons is 47 mm. Total, all together it gives a volume of 2.5 liters.

Unlike the M51, the M57D25 uses a twin-shaft cylinder head with 4 valves per cylinder. The intake valves are 26mm in diameter, the exhaust valves are of a similar size and the valve stem diameter is 6mm.

The camshafts rotate the timing chain, the reliability of the chain is high and with normal maintenance, may never give you any problems at all.

Common rail injection system and Garrett GT2052V variable geometry turbocharger are used here.

To improve the environmental performance of the M57 is designed to improve the system of exhaust gas recirculation EGR and intake manifold with vortex flaps. The engine is controlled by Bosch DDE4.0 ECU.

From 2003 to 2007, a diesel M57TUD25 was produced, which differed by a cylinder block M57D30 with a 75.1 mm crankshaft, Garrett GT2056V turbine and DDE5.0 brain.
In 2007, production of the 2.5-liter diesel M57 was phased out and its place was taken by the M57TUD30U2.

Modifications of the BMW M57D25 engine

  • M57D25O0 (2000 – 2003) – the basic version of the M57 D25 with a Garrett GT2052V turbine. Engine power is 163 hp at 4000 rpm, torque is 350 Nm at 2000-2500 rpm. The motor was on E39 525d, and the 150 hp version was for Opel Omega B and there was called Y25DT.
  • M57D25O1 (2004 – 2007) – updated motor of M57TU series. Power increased to 177 hp at 4000 rpm, torque is 400 Nm at 2000-2750 rpm. Garrett GT2056V turbocharger is used here. This engine is found in BMW E60 525d cars.

Problems and disadvantages of BMW M57D25 engines

  1. Vortex flaps. As with the M47, there is a problem with the vortex flaps here, which can come off and get into the motor, putting it in a very real state of disrepair. It is best to remove the flaps as soon as possible by installing plugs and flashing the ECU to work without these miracle devices.
  2. Knocks, noises. This is the second popular problem with the crankshaft damper, look at what condition it is in, perhaps it should be replaced.
  3. Loss of power, exhaust inside the car. Most often the problem is a cracked exhaust manifold, it is replaced with a cast iron one from M57 not TU.

The resource of injectors on M57 is about 100 thousand kilometers. Service life of the turbine is very long and can exceed 300-400 thousand km, but if you use low-quality engine oil, the resource can be very much reduced.
In general, the M57 diesel is very reliable and serves as long as possible, of course, with proper care, use of good fuel and oil. Quality fuel is very important here, otherwise the fuel system will quickly fall into disrepair. Observing the norms of normal operation, the life of the M57 engine will be more than 500 thousand kilometers.

You can increase the power of the motor by conventional firmware of the control unit. This makes it possible to get on top of 35-40 hp and significantly improve the dynamics of the car, there is nothing else to do here.
