BMW M60B40 engine

Let’s take a closer look at the technical characteristics of the M60B40. Production of BMW M60B40 engine began in 1992, and in 1998 it came to its logical conclusion. The material for the cylinder block was again aluminum and the injector power system allowed to adjust the work of the power unit. The V-shaped construction was no surprise to anyone, eight cylinders made it possible to feel the power of the M60B40 engine every time. Each of these cylinders had four valves, which consistently performed their work. The piston stroke here was exactly 80 millimeters, but the cylinder diameter increased to 89 millimeters. The compression ratio of 10 helped to realize all tasks. The volume of this engine is equal to 4.0 liters. Its power at 5800 rpm will be 286 horsepower. And here the maximum torque is exactly 400 N*m at 4500 rpm, which can not fail to please drivers.

As fuel developers recommend to use at least 95 brand of gasoline. There are also Euro 1 environmental standards here. This unit weighs about 200 kilograms, which allows the car to be light. Fuel consumption M60B40 per 100 kilometers in highway conditions is equal to 9.2 liters, in mixed territory this figure increases to 11.8 liters. And in the urban routine, the engine takes 18.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The oil is consumed at a rate of less than 1000 grams per 1000 kilometers.

The manufacturer allows you to use oil 10W-40, 5W-40, 15W-40, 5W-30. In the engine at the same time is about 7.5 liters of oil. It should be changed somewhere once every 7-10 thousand kilometers. The engine M60B40 has an operating temperature, which is from 95 to 100 degrees. Its resource in practical conditions reaches more than 300 thousand kilometers. Stroker kit and standard kit can be made much more powerful, provided that the entire tuning alogrithm is performed, drivers can achieve potentially more than 400 horsepower. The reliable BMW E34 M60B40, E38 M60B40 or E28 engine works well on cars from the famous manufacturer. In addition, it is also installed on cars with the 540i, 740i, 840i or De Tomaso index.

Reliability, problems and repair of the BMW M60B40 engine

Appeared in early 1992, the M60 series V8 engine replaced the M30B35 and was intended for large sedans, as well as sports coupes and closed the gap between inline sixes and large V12 motors. The 60-series included the 3-liter M60B30 and our 4.0L. M60B40, which will be discussed below.

BMW M60B40 engine

The M60B40 engine cylinder block is aluminum with a 90° camber angle, Nicasil coated liners and forged crankshaft. Since the end of 1994, the block has been replaced by a more reliable aluminum block, the piston, respectively, also changed.

The cylinder heads are aluminum with two camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, with hydrocompensators. The diameter of the intake valves is 35 mm, the exhaust valves 30.5 mm. Characteristics of standard M60B40 camshafts: phase 246/242, lift 9.7/9.4 mm.

The M60 used individual ignition coils, plastic intake manifold, two-row timing chain with a life of about 200-250 thousand kilometers. Engine management system Bosch Motronic 3.3.

This power unit was used in BMW cars with 40i index.

In 1996, the M60B40 engine was replaced by the more advanced and modern M62B44.

Disadvantages

The car with this engine very often shakes at idle speed. Often such a problem is quickly solved, you just need to adjust the phases of gas distribution. You can also check the compression, crankcase gas recirculation valve or lambda probes. Many drivers wonder how much the BMW M60B40 piston should drink. This figure varies depending on the mileage and the serviceability of all systems. Underhood wiring M60B40 E34 sometimes burns, so that this does not happen, you need to service the machine in time.

Oil goes away very quickly. To solve this malfunction, most often you just need to replace the KVKG or removable oil caps and rings. If the cylinders are worn out, then changing the block or conducting a proper liner is clearly not superfluous. The M60B40 E34 in the cabin stinks of exhaust fumes. This is evidenced by many reviews of M60B40.

With poor fuel quality, blocks made of nickasil will quickly lose their reliability, they will wear out and will no longer have such compression as in the beginning. Therefore, alusil liners would be a much better buying decision. The engine is a bit expensive to maintain and fuel consumption is unreasonably high here. Age and high mileage with frequent use will also not inspire confidence when first used. The BMW M60B40’s BMW M60B40 ozh temperature sensor and parts on the chip wear out frequently.

Sports shafts. Compressor

For the M60B40 engine, there are a number of sport shafts of various characteristics. To give the motor additional power, you need to buy tuning shafts (for example, 272/258 lift 11/10.5), cold intake, sports exhaust, adjust and get an additional 50 hp. You can put more evil shafts, port the cylinder head and squeeze out a few dozen more horses, but the car will become uncomfortable for operation in urban conditions.

As an alternative, you should consider buying a compressor kit (for example, ESS, based on Vortech V-3 Si) with a Bosch 044 pump and installing it on a standard piston. Such kits blow up to 0.5 bar and it is enough to get 400 hp. And the cost of such solutions is not much more expensive than the atmospheric version.
