Reliability, problems and repair of the BMW M62B44 engine
In 1996, the M60 engines were replaced by a new refined M62 series and the M60B40 engine was replaced by the updated M62B44. The basis for the creation of a 4.4-liter power unit was the predecessor M60B40, the cylinder block of which was changed for a larger cylinder bore, liners nikasilovyh, since 1998, nikasil replaced by alusil. Crankshaft is new steel long stroke, with 6 counterweights, connecting rods remained old M60, pistons are new for a diameter of 92 mm.
The cylinder heads are similar to those used on the M60, the characteristics of camshafts M62B44 (phase 236/228, lift 9/9 mm) have changed. Valves remained old: diameter of inlet valves 35 mm, exhaust valves 30.5 mm. The plates and springs are lightened, the cylinder-head cover is magnesium. The double-row timing chain has been replaced by a new single-row chain, the service life of which is about 150-200 thousand kilometers. Throttle valves are new, the intake manifold has been changed, ignition coils are similar to M52 engines. In addition, a programmable thermostat was used, the engine management system was replaced by Bosch DME M5.2.
Since 1998, the engine received a technical update, added a system of changing the phases of gas distribution on the intake shaft VANOS, electronic throttle, intake manifold with channels of smaller diameter, changed the control system to Bosch DME M7.2, and the new engine was named M62TUB44.
This power unit was used on BMW cars with the index 40i.
On the basis of M62B44 was produced a younger 3.5-liter variation, under the name M62B35 and a model with a working volume of 4.6 liters. M62B46.
Another version of the BMW engine in V8 configuration, appeared in 2001, it was then that the new family N62 began to squeeze the M-series, the successor to the M62B44 was the N62B44.
Problems and disadvantages of BMW M62B44 engines
- M62 engine knocking. Such unpleasant sounds can cause a stretched timing chain, the service life of which is about 150-200 thousand kilometers, chain bypass bar, tensioner bar, tensioner, or the Vanos system, its resource is the same. Check and do not tighten.
- Leaks. On the M62 often starts to leak valve cover gasket, change it and everything will be fine. The coolant bath can also leak. Change the coolant bath, intake manifold gaskets and pump.
- Swimming revs. Uneven operation of the M62 engine is mainly due to air suction in the intake manifold, faulty KVKG, air flow meter, throttle position sensors, or dirty throttle valves.
- An uneven operation of the M62 engine is mainly due to air suction in the intake manifold, faulty KVKG, air flow meter, throttle position sensors, or dirty throttle valves.
In addition, after 250 thousand kilometers on the M62 increases oil consumption, which is solved by replacing the oil caps, every 200 thousand die engine cushions, not too long goes the generator. The motor likes only quality oil, ideally that recommended by the manufacturer. It is not worth saving on working fluids in M62, and together with regular maintenance and competent care, the engine will drive for a very long time and practically without problems.
Tuning BMW M62B44 engine
Sports shafts. Compressor
The first thing to do to increase power when it comes to a vanos M62TU is to install a wide channel intake manifold from the M62. Add later camshafts (like 258/258), sport exhaust and tune. At the output we will get ~330-340 hp, for the city it is more than enough. There is no sense to just chip a standard M62.
If you need power for 400 hp, then the compressor is your choice. There are enough ready kits on the market for installation on a standard BMW M62 piston, but their prices are not too friendly, so get ready to pay. We buy a compressor kit, Bosch 044 pump and at a pressure of 0.5 bar we get 400 hp. To go deeper and build a turbo is too expensive and not profitable, it is easier to move to BMW M5.
