Reliability and repair of the BMW M62B46 engine
BMW M62The BMW X5 E53, introduced in 1999, quickly gained a reputation as a dynamic sporty SUV and the power of the standard 4.4-liter M62B44 was not enough. To give the car even more acceleration, Alpina took the M62B44 cylinder block, increased the cylinder bore by 1mm, installed a crankshaft with increased piston stroke (82.7mm was 82.7mm, became 85mm), Mahle pistons, its own connecting rods and what came out was called the M62B46.
In addition, the cylinder-head gaskets, intake and exhaust camshafts, covers, and oil pan were replaced. Characteristics of standard camshafts M62B46: phase 249/249, lift 10.5/10.5 mm. Valve diameters remain the same: 35/30.5 mm.
Engine management system Bosch DME M7.2.
This motor was used on BMW X5 E53 cars.
Later, just 2 years after the beginning of production, the M62B46 engine was replaced by a new development of BMW N62B48.
Problems and disadvantages of BMW M62B46 engines
- M62 engine knocking. Such unpleasant sounds can cause a stretched timing chain, whose service life is about 150-200 thousand kilometers, chain bypass bar, tensioner bar, tensioner, or the Vanos system, its resource is the same. Check and do not tighten.
- Leaks. On the M62 often starts to leak valve cover gasket, change it and everything will be fine. The coolant bath can also leak. Change the bath, intake manifold gaskets and pump.
- Swimming revolutions. Uneven operation of the M62 engine is mainly due to air suction in the intake manifold, faulty KVKG, air flow meter, throttle position sensors, or dirty throttle valves.
Besides, after 250 thousand kilometers the oil consumption increases on M62, which is solved by replacement of oil caps, every 200 thousand kilometers the engine cushions die, the generator does not run too long. The motor likes only quality oil, ideally that recommended by the manufacturer. It is not worth saving on working fluids in M62, and together with regular maintenance and competent care, the engine will drive for a long time and practically without problems.
Tuning BMW M62B46 engine
Sports shafts. Compressor
The first thing you need to do to increase power is to install an intake manifold with wide channels from the M62. Add camshafts later (for example 258/258), sport exhaust and tune. At the output we will get ~330-340 hp, for the city it is more than enough. There is no sense to just chip a standard M62.
If you need power for 400 hp, then the compressor is your choice. There are enough ready kits on the market for installation on a standard BMW M62 piston, but their prices are not too friendly, so get ready to pay. We buy a compressor kit, Bosch 044 pump and at a pressure of 0.5 bar we get 400 hp. To go deeper and build a turbo is too expensive and not profitable, it is easier to move to the BMW M5.
