Reliability, problems and repairs of the BMW N13 engine
BMW’s new generation of four-cylinder engines was named N13 (Prince) and was developed in cooperation with France’s PSA Group. The new N13 in 2011 replaced all of the atmospheric four-cylinder engines in production, such as the N43B16, N43B20, N45B16, N45B20S, N46B18 and N46B20.
The N13 cylinder block is made of aluminum alloy with dry cast iron liners, forged crankshaft with 8 counterweights, 138.5mm long connecting rods, 77mm Mahle pistons.
The cylinder head is new, with a system of infinitely variable valve lift Valvetronic III, as on the N55 and N20, as well as the familiar Double-VANOS dual-shaft timing system, the camshafts themselves are compound. The engine is also equipped with direct fuel injection.
Turbocharger on BMW N13 twinscroll Garrett MGT1549ZDL, blowing 0.7 bar.
Engine management system Bosch MEVD17.2.4.
This motor was used in BMW cars with 14i, 16i, 18i and 20i indexes.
Since 2014, a 3-cylinder successor, the B38, has been produced.
Modifications of the BMW N13B16 engine
- N13B16M0 (2011 – present) – basic version with liquid-oil heat exchanger, center and rear part of the exhaust on 65 mm pipe. Power 170 hp at 4800 rpm, torque 250 Nm at 1500-4500 rpm. For BMW models with index 18i and 20i.
- N13B16U0 (2011 – present) – variation without heat exchanger, with center and rear exhaust on 52 mm pipe. The version is programmatically throttled to 136 hp at 4350 rpm, 220 Nm of torque at 1350-4300 rpm. For models with the index 16i.
- N13B16K0 (2012 – present) – weak modification with exhaust similar to 116i and 102 hp at 4000 rpm, torque 180 Nm at 1100-3900 rpm. For BMW models with the index 14i.
Problems and disadvantages of BMW N13B16 engines
- Engine vibration. Often caused by dirty injectors, check.
- Swimming revs. The cause of this malfunction, in most cases, is a dirty idle valve and throttle valve.
- High fuel consumption. Check the air flow meter, it may be the air flow meter.
- In addition, the N13 engine likes frequent changes of working fluids and hates saving money on them. Use quality gasoline, preferably 98 and oil recommended by BMW. Keep an eye on the condition of the motor, regular maintenance and N13B16 will not let you down.
Tuning BMW N13B16 engine
Chip tuning
The easiest and most reliable way to increase the power of the BMW N13 is chip tuning. There are a lot of offices engaged in flashing N13, you only need to go and pay for the service. At the output we get reliable 200 hp and it is a great option to inexpensively improve the dynamic performance of your BMW. If constant active operation is planned, then it is not superfluous to install a heat exchanger from BMW 118i.
