Reliability, problems and repairs of the BMW N43B16 engine

BMW’s small 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, the N43B16, replaced its predecessor, the N42B18, somewhat belatedly and was developed from the older N43B20. Unlike the 2-liter engine, the cylinder bore was reduced from 84 mm to 82 mm, a short-stroke crankshaft with a stroke of 75.7 mm (vs. 90 mm) was installed, which allowed to reduce the displacement. Compared to its predecessor, the N43B16 is equipped with pistons with increased compression ratio up to 12, direct fuel injection, but lost the Valvetronic valve lift system. The engine management system was replaced by Siemens MSD 81.2.

BMW N43B16 engine

This engine was used on BMW cars with the index 16i.

Along with it, related models N45B16 and N46B18 were produced for more affordable BMW versions.

The next generation of BMW’s small four-cylinder engines was the 1.6-liter turbocharged N13B16, which replaced the N43 in 2011.

BMW N43B16 engine problems and disadvantages

  • The engine is equipped with a direct fuel injection system and many problems are related to it
  • The expensive injectors here fail quickly due to poor quality gasoline
  • The cause of uneven engine performance can also be due to broken ignition coils
  • This powertrain is very hot, cheap oil in it can simply curdle
  • Cooling system flanges and tubes often crack, special inspection is needed
  • On mileage of 50 – 70 thousand kilometers here often already leaks and requires replacement of the vacuum pump
  • The timing gear has a low resource, especially Double VANOS components

Tuning the engine BMW N43B16

Chip tuning

Since the engine is typically urban and in no way intended for racing, there is no sane tuning for it on sale. The way out can be a trip to the tuning office for a firmware, where together with the intake and sports exhaust, can add about 10-15 hp. However, significant changes in dynamics will not follow. The real way out in this situation may be to replace the car with a more powerful BMW.
