Reliability and construction of the BMW N45B16 engine
Low-volume 1.6-liter engine BMW N45B16 was developed in 2004 on the basis of the predecessor N42B18. The new engine features a different crankshaft with a shorter piston stroke (81 mm, now 72 mm), different connecting rods and a modified piston. In addition, the N45B16 does not use the Valvetronic valve lift height modification system. The cylinder head is covered with a different cover, and a new alternator and plugs are used. Since 2007, the engine was updated, received a new control unit Bosch ME17.4.5, and the letter N was added to the name – N45NB16.
This motor was used on BMW cars with the index 16i.
Along with this engine in the N45 series, a 2-liter sporty version – N45B20S – was produced in limited edition.
In parallel with N45, for the most basic and cheap versions of BMW, related models N43B16 and N46B18 were produced.
Since 2011, this engine was replaced by a new turbocharged 1.6-liter N13B16.
Problems and disadvantages of engines N45B16
- Engine knocking. Often the problem lies in the tensioner of the timing chain. In addition, the chains themselves are not too durable and after a mileage of about 100 thousand kilometers can stretch.
- Vibration. In most cases, the problem of vibration at idle is associated with the Vanos system. Cleaning will help to get rid of the malfunction.
In addition, the engine is prone to detonation and, accordingly, to the quality of fuel, as well as oil. It is not recommended to joke with oil, it is necessary to pour only what is recommended by BMW, otherwise there is a chance to get big problems up to overhaul.

This power unit was not conceived as a sporty and there is no normal tuning for it. It is difficult to come up with something except evil firmware, low drag filter and sporty exhaust. All this will give about 10 hp and a slight sense of dynamics. For a serious power increase, you need to change the car to a more powerful BMW.
