Reliability, problems and repair of BMW N46B18 engine
BMW N46The younger modification of the N46 series under the name N46B18, was developed in 2004 on the basis of N46B20 and was produced only for BMW E46 316. Given the fact that in 2005 the E46 was removed from production, this powerplant was not widely distributed. Unlike the base motor, the 1.8-liter engine had a short-stroke crankshaft replaced (81 mm vs. 90 mm in the 2.0-liter), pistons for a compression ratio of 10.2 and an intake manifold without DISA system.
This version of the engine was intended to replace the N42B18 and unlike the 42nd, the new N46B18 engine has a new crankshaft and balancer shafts, connecting rods, cylinder head cover, a different timing chain tensioner, a new intake manifold, plugs, alternator, Valvetronic control unit integrated into the ECU and a few other minor details.
Bosch ME 9.2 engine management system.
Like the 2-liter modification, the N46B18 has several related models, produced in parallel and having common roots: N45B16 and N43B16
The replacement for this and all other four-cylinder gasoline engines BMW, came in 2011 in the person of N13B16, turbocharged 1.6-liter four, varying degrees of power.
Problems and drawbacks of the N46B18 engines
-
- Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the N46
- The main problems of the motor are related to its extremely high operating temperature
- First of all, the oil sealing caps quickly harden and start to burn oil
- Furthermore, curdled grease clogs the oil passages and disables the Valvetronic
- At least up to 100,000 km, the timing chain or VANOS system is likely to need attention.
- Valve cover leaks usually appear as early as 50-70,000 kilometers
Tuning of BMW N46B18 engine
Chip tuning
Just like all low-volume 4-cylinder gasoline engines BMW, N46B18 is poorly adapted to refinements and the only inexpensive way to increase power is firmware. In the tuning office you will install a sports filter, remove the catalytic converter and pour evil firmware. All this will give as much as 10 hp and a small increase in dynamics. For a big boost, you will have to change the engine to a 6-cylinder, or the car to a more powerful BMW.
