Reliability of the N55B30 engine

The next generation inline turbo six from BMW, released in 2009 and positioned as a replacement for the popular N54B30 and the less common N62B40. The cylinder block is the same as on the N54, aluminum with cast iron liners and oil injectors, the crankshaft is lightened by 3 kg (was 23.3 kg), pistons and connecting rods have changed. The length of connecting rods is 144.35 mm.

The cylinder head has been changed, the system of changing the gas distribution phases on two shafts Bi-VANOS has been improved, the system of changing the valve lift height Valvetronic III has been added to it. The diameter of the intake valves is 32 mm, the exhaust valves 28 mm. Characteristics of camshafts on BMW N55 (intake/exhaust): phase 255/261 lift 9.9/9.7 mm. The intake and exhaust systems have changed.

BMW N55B30 engine

The twin-turbocharger configuration has been replaced by a single, but twin-scroll Borg Warner B03, which provides a smooth torque band from 1200 rpm. The boost pressure on the standard N55 engine is 0.65 bar. The engine management system is now Bosch MEVD17.2.

The N55B30 engine was used in BMW’s 35i and 40i cars.

In addition, the N55 engine was the basis for the S55 sports engine developed by the BMW M GmbH division for the BMW M3 and M4 sports cars.

Modifications of the BMW N55B30 engine

  1. N55B30M0 (2009 to present) – base engine with an output of 306 hp at 5800 rpm, 400 Nm of torque at 1200-5000 rpm. For BMW versions with index 35i.
  2. N55 (2010 to present) – 320 hp at 5800-6000 rpm, 450 Nm of torque at 1300-4500 rpm. Cooling has been improved and ECU firmware has been changed. For BMW 35i and 40i versions.
  3. N55B30O0 (2011 – present) – N55 analog with 326 hp at 5800-6000 rpm, 450 Nm of torque at 1300-4500 rpm. It was used on BMW models with the index 35i.
  4. N55HP (2011 – present) – 340 hp version at 5800-6000 rpm, 450 Nm/500 Nm (Overboost) torque at 1300-4500 rpm. Used on BMW models with 35i index.
  5. N55B30T0 (2015 – current) – 360 hp version at 5800-6000 rpm, 465 Nm torque at 1350-5250 rpm. It was used on BMW models with the 40i index.
  6. N55B30O0 (2015 – current) – 370 hp version at 6500 rpm, 465 Nm/500 Nm (Overboost) torque at 1400-5550 rpm. It was used on BMW M2 models.

Problems and disadvantages of BMW N55B30 engines

  • Oil burn on the N55. Often the problem of high oil consumption lies in the crankcase gas ventilation valve (CVVG), check.
  • Ignition skips. This malfunction is most likely caused by caked hydrocompensators. Check and use only good oil.
  • Engine vibrations. The root of the evil in the failed injectors, they live about 80-100 thousand kilometers. Check, buy new injectors and the engine will work like clockwork again.

Among other things, the traditional problem with the fuel injector has not disappeared, it tends to die periodically, the motor likes quality oil and gasoline, which is not surprising.

Otherwise, the motor N55 is excellent, powerful, quite reliable and with some reserve for tuning. Buying a BMW N55 is definitely a good choice.

Tuning BMW N55B30 engine

Chip tuning. Chip-exhaust. Stage 2

Similar to the last generation N54, the new 55 version is just as easy to chip and produces 380+ hp. Buy the downpipes and on the regular JB4 Stage 2 firmware the engine allows you to raise the power to 360+ hp. Buy a cold intake (BMS for example) and a full sport exhaust and you will get 380+ hp. After such modifications your BMW with N55 will go 402m in about ~12 sec. A stock BMW 135i with N55 will go about ~13.5. The difference is significant.

ENGINE RATING: 5-
