Design and repair of the N62B36 engine
Following the M62B35 was a new engine N62B36, which replaced its predecessor. The basis for the development of this motor, was the older brother N62B44, in the cylinder block of which was installed a crankshaft with a stroke of 81.2 mm (was 82.7 mm), reduced cylinder diameter to 84 mm (was 92 mm) and replaced the connecting rods.
The cylinder head is similar to the 4.4-liter counterpart, but with a reduced diameter of the intake valves to 32 mm, the exhaust valves are the same, 29 mm. Characteristics of camshafts of the standard N62B36: phase 282/254, lift 0.3-9.85/9.7.
Relative to the previous version of the small V8, the N62B36 features Valvetronic intake valve lift and Dual-VANOS/Bi-VANOS intake and exhaust camshaft timing.
Bosch DME ME 9.2 engine management system.
This powertrain was used in BMW cars with the 35i index.
In 2005, BMW presented a replacement for the N62B36, it became a modified N62B40, with a working volume of 4 liters.
Problems and disadvantages of BMW N62B36 engines
- The main problems of the motor are related to failures in the Valvetronic and VANOS system
- The second place here is the growing oil burn due to the wear of oil caps
- The cause of floating revs is usually ignition coils or flow meters
- It is very common for the alternator housing gasket and crankshaft oil seal to leak
- Over high mileage, crumbs from a deteriorating catalytic converter are sucked into the cylinders
Tuning BMW N62B36 engine
Chip tuning
The easiest way to somehow transform the car is chip tuning. We need to buy a sport exhaust system, replace the filters and customize the ECU. Such modifications will bring the power up to 300 hp and give the motor a sense of aggressiveness. There is no point in going deeper, it is easier to sell your car and buy a BMW helper.
