Reliability, problems and repairs of the BMW N62B48 engine
Another larger displacement V8, a refined version of the N62B44 that replaced its predecessor in 2005, along with this, the N62B48 is the successor to the M62B46. The updated power unit has a changed cylinder block, for increased, by 1 mm in diameter (up to 93 mm), pistons, installed steel crankshaft with a longer stroke (88.3 mm, was 82.7 mm), used new connecting rods, with reduced to 18 mm width.
The cylinder heads have been slightly modified, combustion chambers and exhaust ducts have been refined for a new exhaust manifold with a larger diameter, the material of manufacture of the cylinder heads is now silumin. Characteristics of camshafts N62TU: 282/254, lift 0.3-9.85/9.7 mm. Valve diameters are similar to N62B44. New intake manifold with two-stage DISA length change system is used. Engine management system Bosch DME ME 9.2.2.2. This motor was used on BMW cars with index 50i. Since 2005, on the basis of N62B48 a younger variation was produced under the name N62B40.
Taking into account the trends in the development of the Bavarian company, the N62B48 engine became the last atmospheric V8 from BMW. Its successor, the N63B44, released in 2008, was equipped with a 4.4-liter turbo engine.
Troubles and drawbacks of BMW N62B48 engines
- Oil consumption. Problems with increased oil consumption on the N62 begin, as a rule, to 100 thousand kilometers of mileage and the cause is oil caps. After another 50-100k the oil rings die.
- Floating revolutions. Uneven engine operation is often associated with failed ignition coils. Check, change and the engine will work normally. Other causes: air intake, flow meter, valvetronic.
- Oil leaks. Most often leaks crankshaft oil seal or generator housing gasket. Replace and the leaks will disappear.
Among other things, with the passage of time on N62 catalytic converters are destroyed and their honeycombs get into the cylinders, the consequences – scoring. Therefore, it is better to remove catalytic converters and instead of them put flame arresters. That the problems were as little as possible and the resource as long as possible, you should not save on oil and gasoline, regularly maintain your N62B44 and your motor will deliver a minimum of problems and maximum pleasure.
Tuning the BMW N62B48 engine
Compressor
The only adequate and really increasing power is to install a compressor kit. You buy the most stable and popular kit from ESS, put it on a standard piston, change the exhaust to a sporty one. At a maximum pressure of 0.5 bar, your N62B48 will produce about 430-450 hp. However, in light of the current prices for BMW M5 E60/M6 E63, to build a powerful N62 is not profitable in any way, it is easier to buy a powerful car with a V10.
