The 1.3-liter turbocharged GSE-T4 engine from the Stellantis Group was introduced in 2018. This engine was used on popular Fiat and Jeep models such as the Fiat 500X, Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade. The engine replaced the old atmospheric units and provided better fuel economy and dynamics thanks to turbocharging. However, its production was short-lived: with the development of hybrid technology, the GSE-T4 engine gave way to a hybrid version with the index GSE-T4xe.

Engine Applications
The GSE-T4 engine is used in the following models:
- Fiat 500X (2018-2022) – compact urban crossover.
- Jeep Compass (2020-2022) – compact crossover with good cross-country ability.
- Jeep Renegade (2018-2021) – a subcompact SUV.
These models used the GSE-T4 to improve fuel efficiency and performance on the highway and in urban areas. However, hybrid versions began to push this engine out of the market starting in 2022.
Main issues and drawbacks
The GSE-T4 engine has a number of shortcomings similar to its 1.0-liter “sibling” GSE-T3. The main problems that owners complain about are:
- MultiAir system: as with the GSE-T3 engine, the MultiAir III system is complex and can fail with insufficient maintenance. Because of this, owners often have to replace the entire cylinder head.
- Timing chain: The timing chain has a relatively short life, which may require replacement at mileage below the manufacturer’s stated life.
- Exhaust system: complex exhaust systems can be capricious and require careful attention to operation.
How good is this engine
The GSE-T4 engine is a modern turbocharged unit designed for compact cars and crossovers. Its features have improved performance and lower emissions, but complex technologies like MultiAir and timing chain issues can require increased attention to maintenance.
