Ford Duratorq DLD-418 1.8-liter diesel engines were installed in various models of Ford vehicles from 2002 to 2013. These engines were a development of the old Endura diesel range and were equipped with a modern Common Rail fuel injection system, which significantly improved their fuel economy and environmental performance. In this article we will consider the main modifications of these engines, their characteristics and problems faced by owners.
Main modifications of Duratorq DLD-418 engines
Motors Duratorq DLD-418 had several modifications depending on the year of production and the model of the car:
- HCPA (2002-2013) – installed on Ford C-Max and Ford Connect;
- FFDA (2002-2004) – installed on Ford Focus of the first generation after restyling;
- KKKDA and KKDB (2004-2011) – fitted to second-generation Ford Focus and Ford C-Max;
- QYWA (2006-2012) – used on Ford Galaxy and S-Max minivans.

Duratorq DLD-418 engine problems and shortcomings
Despite their high performance and life, Duratorq 1.8 TDCi engines had a number of typical problems:
- Delphi’s Common Rail system. These engines are very demanding on diesel fuel quality. If low-quality fuel is used, the injectors and the fuel injector can fail, requiring expensive repairs.
- Injector problems. At mileages over 100,000 km, injectors often begin to “pour”, which leads to overheating and burnout of pistons.
- Crankshaft pulley damper and camshaft position sensor. These components have a limited resource, and their malfunctions can cause problems with starting the engine.
- Fuel System Overhaul. In the case of serious breakdowns of fuel equipment requires the removal of the fuel injector, injectors and tank, which increases the cost of repair.
1.8-liter Ford Duratorq DLD-418 engines are reliable and powerful diesel units, which provided good power and economy. However, they have high requirements for fuel quality and regular maintenance, which is important to consider when operating them.
