The two-liter Duratorq diesel engine, with an output not exceeding 115 horsepower, is equipped with a fuel system with a Bosch VP30 and VP44 pump. When the Ford concern in 2000 began cooperation with Delphi, the power units received Common Rail fuel system, and the engine power reached 130 horsepower.
We told you about the 1.8-liter Ford engine here. And on our YouTube channel, you’ll see a review of the 130-horsepower two-liter Ford 2.0 TDCI Duratorq (FMBA, N7BA) engine.
The engine was installed on the third-generation Ford Mondeo throughout the entire period of production: from 2000 to the beginning of 2007. Also this motor was used in diesel Jaguar X-type (X404), produced from mid-2003 to May 2009.

Is the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi engine reliable?
This power unit is recognized as rather unreliable, it rarely requires repair. We will tell you in detail about its problems related to the Delphi fuel system – it is the one that causes the most trouble.
Problems with the generator
An unreliable generator is installed in the diesel power unit: most often the brushes or rotor fail in it. The fact that it is out of order is signaled by a lighted charging lamp. Sometimes problems with the generator become the cause of a voltage spike, because of which the injector code resets. And, as a result, the car does not start.
Replacing the GUR and pump
GUR and pump are a combined unit. But if the pump is easy and inexpensive to find a replacement, the pump is expensive and often fails.
Thermostats
The thermostats in the engine are unreliable: if they fail, the engine warms up badly. The engine uses 2 thermostats: small and large. Their cost differs: if the large thermostat is inexpensive, then the small one costs about fifty dollars and is produced almost only original.
The features of the belt tensioner
Another unreliable detail. The belt tensioner quickly wears out, the bushings of the tensioner shock absorber are destroyed. Problems are signaled by strong belt vibration and noises.
The pros of the turbine
In the Ford 2.0 TDCi motor, a Garret turbine is used. As previously written, on the version from 130 horsepower – with variable geometry. On models released after 2005, the geometry is controlled by an electric servo.
The turbine has a number of pluses: it is good and reliable, problems arise only with geometry, jamming due to soot. The motor also often destroys the pipe from the turbine to the intercooler: the pipe can burst or crack at the clamps.
Special features of the Delphi fuel injectors
Since October 2001, the engine 2.0 TDCi was produced with a fuel system Delphi. Less than a year later, Mondeo began to install the motor with the same fuel system, deformed to 115 horsepower. By the way, in August 2002, the engine for Ford Transit with 125 horsepower was released.
It is worth remembering that the service life of the Delphi fuel injector significantly reduces the fuel of poor quality, and the fuel filter must be used exclusively original, changing it every ten thousand kilometers: only it can cope with filtration of particles larger than 5 microns. If you ignore these rules, that the fuel injector will either simply not inject fuel to the required minimum pressure, or even chase chips.
Delphi injectors
These injectors are simple and reliable due to their design. But in the two thousandths, there were no spare parts for them, which made repairs difficult. Most often you need to replace the control valve, made of soft alloy: over time it wears out if there were impurities in the fuel. Sometimes it is necessary to change nozzle atomizers.
According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, these injectors must necessarily be prescribed after repair. But in fact it is not necessary to prescribe sixteen-digit codes at all.
When repairing the injectors yourself, it is enough to prescribe the original codes. Owners of Ford cars, using a Chinese scanner ELM327 (it costs less than ten dollars) and diagnostic software, can easily carry out diagnostics, as well as prescribe injector codes from the phone.
Problems with Delphi injectors
That the injectors pour, it is easiest to check at a strong load on the power unit: if the thrust drops during acceleration, as well as the glow plug spiral lights up, then you need to check the condition of the injectors.
Having repaired the injectors, it is necessary to deflate the fuel system: if the fuel supply pipes are screwed up tightly, it is necessary to plug the return pipes, remove the brown plug from the fuel injector and crank the engine with the starter. It is necessary to crank until diesel fuel flows from the tubes to the injectors.
The peculiarities of the timing chain
Over time, it stretches, rustles and rattles, in extreme cases, it can also slip off. To notice the problem in advance, you need to listen to the cold engine from the side of the timing chain, whether there is no noise.
You can buy a timing chain in one piece for about $250.
Can a 2.0 TDCi engine knock?
This happens rarely, most often – at a mileage of 300 thousand kilometers. This result can be caused by high loads and constant driving “in tension”.
