Ford’s 2.0 TDDi Duratorq diesel engines were produced in the early 2000s and fitted to models such as the Ford Transit and Ford Mondeo. They were characterized by high reliability, although they had a number of design flaws that eventually manifested themselves in operation. In this article we will consider three main modifications of these motors: D3FA, D5BA and D6BA, including their technical characteristics and the most common problems.
1. Ford 2.0 TDDi D3FA (2000-2006)
The D3FA engine was installed exclusively in the fourth generation Ford Transit. It was the basic modification without intercooler, which had the lowest power among Ford diesels. The main emphasis in this engine was on simplicity and economy.
Characteristics | Meaning |
---|---|
Exact volume | 1998 cm³ |
Power system | Direct injection |
Engine power | 75 hp |
Torque | 185 Nm |
Cylinder block | Cast iron, R4 |
Cylinder head | Aluminum, 16 valves |
Cylinder diameter | 86 mm |
Piston stroke | 86 mm |
Compression ratio | 19.0 |
Engine Features | No |
Hydrocompensators | Yes |
Transmission timing | Two-row chain |
Fasor regulator | No |
Turbocharging | Yes |
Oil volume | 6.4 liters 5W-30 |
Fuel type | Diesel |
Environmental class | Euro 3 |
Example service life | 320,000 km |
Engine weight | 210 kg |
Disadvantages and problems of the D3FA engine:
- Reliability of the Bosch VP30 fuel pump: the fuel pump does not tolerate impurities in the fuel well, which can lead to contaminated injectors and traction problems.
- Wear of camshaft beds: there is increased wear in this assembly at high mileage.
- Chain timing mechanism: may require attention after 100-150 thousand kilometers.
- Crank bushings: heavy knocking can be a signal of crank bushing failure.
2. Ford 2.0 TDDi D5BA (2000-2005)
The D5BA engine was a more powerful version and was installed in the third generation Ford Mondeo, designed mainly for corporate fleets and cabs. This modification was already equipped with an intercooler, which improved performance.
Characteristics | Value |
---|---|
Exact volume | 1998 cm³ |
Power system | Direct injection |
Engine power | 90 hp |
Torque | 245 Nm |
Cylinder block | Cast iron, R4 |
Cylinder head | Aluminum, 16 valves |
Cylinder diameter | 86 mm |
Piston stroke | 86 mm |
Compression ratio | 19.0 |
Engine features | Intercooler |
Hydrocompensators | Yes |
Transmission timing | Two-row chain |
Fasor regulator | No |
Turbocharging | Yes |
Oil volume | 6.2 liters 5W-30 |
Fuel type | Diesel |
Environmental class | Euro 3 |
Example service life | 250,000 km |
Engine weight | 210 kg |
Disadvantages and problems of the D5BA engine:
- Stretching of the timing chain: the massive timing chain can stretch after 100-150 thousand kilometers of mileage.
- Wear of camshaft beds: there is a similar problem as in D3FA.
- Fuel system: wear of the fuel injector due to impurities in the fuel can clog the injectors, resulting in poor engine performance.
3. Ford 2.0 TDDi D6BA (2000-2002)
This modification was the most powerful engine of the TDDi series and was installed in the third-generation Ford Mondeo until its first restyling. Subsequently, this engine was replaced by a more modern unit with a Common Rail system.
Characteristics | Meaning |
---|---|
Exact volume | 1998 cm³ |
Power system | Direct injection |
Engine power | 115 hp |
Torque | 280 Nm |
Cylinder block | Cast iron, R4 |
Cylinder head | Aluminum, 16 valves |
Cylinder diameter | 86 mm |
Piston stroke | 86 mm |
Compression ratio | 19.0 |
Engine features | Intercooler |
Hydrocompensators | Yes |
Transmission timing | Chain |
Fasor regulator | No |
Turbocharging | Yes |
Oil volume | 6.25 liters 5W-30 |
Fuel type | Diesel |
Environmental class | Euro 3 |
Example service life | 240,000 km |
Engine weight | 210 kg |
Disadvantages and problems of the D6BA engine:
- Bosch VP-44 fuel pump: afraid of contaminants in the fuel, which can lead to rapid wear of the injectors and traction problems.
- Transmission timing chain stretching: as with previous models, the chain can be pulled as early as 100-150 thousand kilometers.
- Wear of connecting rods: at high mileage by 200,000 km, knocking in the connecting rods is possible due to wear of the piston pin bushing.
The 2.0 TDDi Duratorq series diesels were an important part of Ford’s engine lineup in the early 2000s. While not bad in terms of power and torque, they suffered from fuel system problems and timing chain stretching. However, with proper care and timely maintenance, these engines could last up to 300,000 kilometers.
