Honda F18 engine troubleshooting and repair

In September 1989, the Honda Accord 4th version was launched, which was equipped with the new F series engine, with a displacement of 1.8 liters. This engine used a 4-cylinder aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners, its height is 219.5 mm. The engine has an open block of cylinders, inside it is installed crankshaft with a stroke of 81.5 mm and balance shafts. The length of connecting rods is 148 mm, and the cylinder diameter is 85 mm. This makes it possible to get a working volume of 1.85 liters.

The F18B head is single-shaft SOHC, but with 4 valves per cylinder. Depending on the version, this head was or was not equipped with VTEC system. The diameter of the intake valves is 34 mm, the exhaust valves 29 mm.

It is desirable to adjust the valves every 40-50 thousand kilometers. Valve clearances on cold engine: intake 0.24-0.28 mm, exhaust 0.28-0.32 mm.

F18B/F18A is equipped with toothed timing belt, its replacement is necessary every 90 thousand kilometers. If the belt breaks in VTEC, the valves will bend, in normal mode it will not.

Together with F18, F20, F22 and F23 motors were also produced. And also, along with F series, H series (H22 and H23) was produced.
The F18B engine was produced until 2002, and then it was replaced by a 2-liter K20A.

Modifications of the Honda F18 engine

  1. F18A (1989 – 1999) – two versions were produced:
    – Carbureted F18A for the JDM Accord and Ascot, used until 1993. Its motor output was 105 hp at 6000 rpm, torque 143 Nm at 4000 rpm.
    – F18A injector version for Accord and Rover 618i, installed until 1999. Has an output of 115 hp at 5500 rpm, torque 158 Nm at 4200 rpm
  2. F18B (1993 – 2002) – VTEC-headed version with 140 hp at 6100 rpm, 168 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm. The motor was installed on Accord and Torneo.
Problems and disadvantages of Honda F18B/F18A engines

F engines are very close to the H series, so their problems are very close. You can familiarize yourself with them in detail here.

Honda F18B engine tuning

Stroker

On the basis of 1.8-liter engine you can make a 2.3-liter F23A. All you need to do is bore the block to 86mm, under the F23A piston, install the same crankshaft and connecting rods, head gasket from the F23A, as well as intake, exhaust, fuel, control box. In the end, it’s easier to buy a contract F23A or other more powerful motor.
