The Anna Engine plant produces the J30 brand of engines from 1997 to the present day. These six-cylinder units have a V-shaped configuration and the cylinder block is made of aluminum, with four valves per cylinder.

J30 engine specifications vary by year and model. For example, the compression ratio can be 9.4 or 10.0 and the engine has a displacement of 2,997 cubic centimeters. Engine output can range from 200 to 255 horsepower and torque from 264 to 315 Nm.

For this engine, it is recommended to use fuel with an octane rating of 95. Fuel consumption for the Acura CL model is 11.8 liters per 100 km in the city, 8.4 liters per 100 km on the highway and 10.1 liters per 100 km in mixed mode.

Oil consumption does not exceed 500 grams per 1000 km. Recommended oil types for the J30 engine include 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 and 10W-40, and the oil volume in the engine is 4.4 liters. It is recommended to change the oil every 10000 km, although it is better to do it every 5000 km to increase the longevity of the engine.

In practice, the engine resource can exceed 300 thousand kilometers. J30 engine is installed on Honda Accord, Honda Odyssey, Honda Avancier, Honda Inspire, Acura CL and Acura RDX.

Honda J30A engine troubleshooting and repair

A 3-liter engine called the J30A began production in 1997. It was based on a compact aluminum 6-cylinder V-shaped cylinder block with a camber angle of 60° and a cylinder spacing of 98 mm. The block height was 235 mm, with a crankshaft inside with a piston stroke of 86 mm, connecting rods were 162 mm long and the compression height of the pistons was 30 mm. This provided a displacement of 3 liters.

The block has two SOHC heads with one camshaft on each, with 4 valves on each cylinder. A VTEC system is used for these block heads. The J30A uses a timing belt, which is required to be changed every 90 thousand kilometers. If the belt breaks, valve damage can occur.

This engine requires periodic valve adjustment every 40-50 thousand kilometers. Valve clearances for a cold engine are: intake 0,2-0,24 mm, exhaust 0,28-0,32 mm.

In addition to the J30A, the J engine family also included the J25, J32, J35 and J37. Production of this motor continued until 2007, after which it was replaced by the J35. However, the J30A can still be found, for example, in the Chinese Acura RDX, where it is known as the J30Y.

Honda J30 engine options

  1. J30A1 (1997-2003) is the base version with 34mm diameter intake valves and 29mm diameter exhaust valves. VTEC is activated at 3500 rpm. Power is 200 hp at 5500 rpm, torque 264 Nm at 4500 rpm.
  2. J30A4 – equipped with 10 compression ratio pistons, 35 mm diameter intake valves and 30 mm diameter exhaust valves. The VTEC system, intake manifold, electronic throttle, and new exhaust manifolds and exhaust system have been improved. Power output is 240 hp at 6,250 rpm and torque is 286 Nm at 5,000 rpm.
  3. J30A5 – technically similar to the J30A4. Power 244 hp at 6250 rpm, torque 286 Nm at 5000 rpm.
  4. J30Y1 is the version installed in the Chinese Acura RDX.
  5. JNA1 is the electric motor version for the Accord Hybrid. Power 255 hp at 6000 rpm, torque 315 Nm at 5000 rpm.

Problems and disadvantages of J30A engines

These motors can have problems with erratic revs due to a dirty throttle plate or EGR. This problem can be solved by cleaning.
Otherwise, these are reliable motors, however, they are old and have all been high mileage, so other problems can occur. In any case, regular maintenance and using quality fuel and oil will keep them in good condition.

Honda J30A engine tuning

Atmospheric

To increase the power of J30A, with a compression ratio of 9.4, you can install on it pistons from J30A4, as well as the head from J32A2 with all the attachments. With a chip, cold intake, J37A throttle body, and 63mm exhaust without catalytic converters, you’ll get about 270-280 hp. There are compressor kits for the J30 (which you can blow into a J30/J32 hybrid as well) that allow you to raise the output substantially, but that’s a different level of cost.
