Honda R20A 2.0 engine

The Honda R20 engine is a 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder engine developed by Honda Motor Company. It was introduced in the market in 2007 and continues to be in use till date. This engine has become popular due to its reliability and optimal performance, which has made it in demand in various Honda models and even in Proton cars.

Engine construction and repair

Honda R engineIn front of us is a two-liter Honda R20A engine, obtained in a very simple and uncomplicated way, namely by installing a long-stroke crankshaft in the R18A block. In addition to increasing the piston stroke (from 87.3 mm to 96.9 mm), the R20A engine received balancer shafts, modified 3-mode intake manifold, the cylinder head is the same – SOHC, with a single camshaft and 16 valves, there is a system of changing the timing of i-VTEC. Like the previous engines, R20A is not equipped with hydrocompensators, valve clearance adjustment is carried out every 40,000 km (if necessary), valve clearance (cold): intake 0.18-0.22 mm, exhaust 0.23-0.27 mm.

Honda R20A 2.0 engine

Relative to the predecessor Honda K20, our motor has become much more urban, with an emphasis on low and medium speeds, increased economy, reliability, simplicity, at the same time with this lost sporty character, but the absolute majority of owners it will not disappoint. There is also a huge number of modifications, about those few that there are look below.

Modifications of Honda R20 engine

  1. R20A1 – Japanese version of the engine, power 150 forces at 6200 rpm, torque 190 Nm at 4200 rpm.
  2. R20A2 – analog R20A1 for Europe.
  3. R20A3 – Accord engine, slightly modified settings, power 156 hp at 6300 rpm, torque 192 Nm at 4300 rpm.
  4. R20A5 – Power: 150 hp at 6200 rpm, Torque: 190 Nm at 4300 rpm. The R20A5 engine is used in the Honda Civic where a balance of power and fuel efficiency is required. This engine is specially tuned to run smoothly at low to medium rpm, making it suitable for urban and suburban driving.
  5. R20Z1 is an i-VTEC motor that closes half of the intake valves at low rpm. The engine was put on Acura ILX, Honda Civic and Acccord. Power output is 150 hp at 6500 rpm, torque 190 Nm at 4300 rpm.

R20 faults and their causes

  • This engine is quite demanding to the quality of fuel and oil used.
  • Bad gasoline quickly destroys the catalytic converter and burns out the lambda probes.
  • Many Honda owners are annoyed by strong knocks from the work of the adsorber valve.
  • The supports of the engine and the drive belt tensioner have a relatively short life span.
  • Since there are no hydrocompensators, it is periodically necessary to adjust valve clearances.

Tuning Honda R20A engine

This motor, to put it mildly, is not very adapted to atmo tuning, but something can be done. Budget tuning is to install a cold intake, direct exhaust and chip tuning, such triviality gives about 10 hp. Need more? Look for a GO Power Motorsport shaft (or something else), a Skunk2 60mm choke, a Weapon R intake receiver, Wiesco pistons for an increased degree of 12.5, you can modify the cylinder head itself, injectors from a 410cc turbo Acura RDX. All this will allow you to increase the power even more (+\- 200 hp), but in real conditions, any less hot hatchback will be faster than such a modified R20A, so how justified it is to spend a few thousand dollars on atmo tuning, you decide.

Compressor and turbo on the R20A

One of the most correct ways to approach tuning is to install a compressor. The market offers a popular kit solution from Jackson Racing based on a Rotrex C30-84 supercharger with an intercooler. To make the motor to fall apart, we will replace the spindle on forged (CP Pistons under compression ratio 9, connecting rods Eagle), take injectors 550cc, fuel pump Walbro 255, customize Hondata FlashPro. Such configurations give more than 250 hp, on even more powerful compressors, like Rotrex C30-94, you can inflate far beyond 300-350 forces.
On the same configuration you can put a turbo kit, on some 28-m Garrett and blow 300 forces. All these transformations cost substantial money, strongly affect the engine life, its stability, not to mention fuel consumption, so to build such a thing is recommended only to fans of their car.
