Application of D4EB engine

D4EB engine was widely used in Hyundai models such as Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Grandeur. These cars were popular due to the powerful and reliable engine, which provided excellent dynamic performance and economy.

Special features and operation

The D4EB engine is characterized by a strong cast-iron cylinder block, which increases its durability. Thanks to the MHI TF035HL turbocharger, the engine achieves high power and torque, which provides good traction and dynamics at various rpm.

Nevertheless, owners are advised to pay attention to regular maintenance. Frequent oil changes (preferably every 7500 km) help to extend the engine life. It is also important to use quality oils that comply with the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid wear and damage to internal components.

Reliability and repair of D4EB engines

Especially for top Hyundai cars, in 2006, a slightly larger diesel engine than the popular D4EA was created. Engineers took this 2nd generation D4EA as a basis and increased the displacement due to larger diameter cylinders. It was 83 mm, now the motor is bored for 87 mm piston. Thanks to this, the working volume has increased from 2.0 to 2.2 liters.

A single-shaft 16-valve SOHC head is installed on top of the block, the design of which does not differ from the D4EA. It also has hydrocompensators, which means you don’t have to think about when to adjust the valves. In the timing belt is used, which goes 90 thousand kilometers according to the manual and then requires replacement. Saving on such things can end with pistons meeting with valves and bending of the latter.

Here is a Common Rail fuel system from Bosch with injection pressure up to 1600 bar. Since it is a turbodiesel, this engine is equipped with a turbine MHI TF035HL, and motor control is assigned to the ECU Bosch EDC16. This engine can be equipped with an open type particulate filter, closed type or without it at all, but all versions meet Euro-4 environmental standards.

There are two versions of D4EB:

  1. with programmed reduced power – 150 hp at 4000 rpm and with a torque of 335 Nm at 1800-2500 rpm
  2. Full version, with 155 hp at 4000 rpm and 343 Nm of torque at 1800-2500 rpm.

This motor has several related and very close in design power units: already mentioned D4EA and 3-cylinder D3EA.

The production of this diesel engine lasted very short time and in 2010 it was replaced by 197-horsepower D4HB.

D4EB maintenance – oil, plugs, filters

Below is the information what oil is suitable for D4EB engine, its volume and tolerances, as well as articles of filters, plugs and frequency of their replacement.

Oil volume in D4EB engine 5.9 liters
Oil and oil filter change interval Every 15,000 km or every 1 year
What oil to use in D4EB 5W-30, 5W-40
Oil filter for D4EB 2632027401
Air filter replacement interval, part number Every 15,000 km, part number 281132B000
Transmission timing belt/chain replacement interval, part number Transmission timing belt, 90,000 km, part number 24312-27250

D4EB engine problems and defects

In terms of reliability and problems, this power unit does not differ from the 2.0-liter diesel engine D4EA. Like the junior motor, the D4EB does not digest bad diesel fuel well. The Bosch CP3 Common Rail fuel system is generally very reliable, but low-quality diesel wears out the injectors very quickly, after which they start to pour. It’s also worth noting that you shouldn’t skimp on engine oil and do regular maintenance. Due to poor lubrication, the camshaft and rocker arms quickly wear out.

The regulations state that the resource of the timing belt is 90 000 km, but in practice there are many cases of its premature breakage. Therefore, it is better not to drive until the last, because when the timing belt breaks, the engine is guaranteed to bend valves – the repair will cost a lot of money. In general, the engine rarely breaks “big”, and the bulk of complaints from owners are related to minor breakdowns: glow plugs and their relays fail, EGR valve clogs, turbine actuator rod breaks, supercharger system pipes burst, etc.

Tuning engine D4EB

Chip tuning

You suddenly became not enough standard 150 horses? Then this diesel engine can be chip-tuned. Ordinary chip tuning will allow you to get about 180 hp and increase torque up to 400-420 Nm. By removing the particulate filter you can remove another 5-7 hp and 10 Nm of torque. You won’t get anything else here, but these are not bad figures for a not-so-new 2.2-liter motor.
