Reliability, problems and repair of G4NA engines

The Nu series replaced the Theta II generation in 2011 and here we’ll take a look at the two-liter representative designated G4NA, which replaces the 2-liter G4KD. The new generation is modeled after the popular 1.6-liter G4FC.

Hyundai-KIA G4NA 2.0L Engines

The G4NA engine has an aluminum cylinder block with thin cast iron liners and no oil injectors. Inside with a centimeter offset crankshaft with a stroke of 97 mm, cylinder diameter 81 mm, piston height 28.5 mm, which together gives the same 2 liters of working volume.

The block is covered with a typical head for engines of this class – it is a 16-valve cylinder head with two camshafts and hydrocompensators. Here is used a system of variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust D-CVVT.

Fuel injection is conventional distributed. At the intake, a two-stage VIS plastic intake manifold is installed, switching at 3000 rpm.

The timing drive is chain, timing chain is maintenance-free, in practice it works normally and serves not less than 150 thousand kilometers.

The engine is controlled by Continental 39101-2EXN0 ECU unit.

In February 2017, the engine was updated: oil nozzles for cooling the pistons appeared, the cooling system was finalized, the cylinder-head gasket was changed.

Based on this engine, several versions such as G4NC and G4ND, as well as 1.8-liter G4NB were created.

Massive problems of G4NA engines

  1. Knocking, noise, oil burning. You probably have scoring in the cylinders – this is a typical situation for this motor even at low mileage. The reason for this is not fully thought out design of pistons, their insufficient cooling and a number of other factors.
    How to avoid scoring: a good overhaul with boring +0.5 mm or liners with installation of oil injectors. It is also worth changing the oil every 7500 km, antifreeze every 40 thousand km and monitor the condition of the radiator. But all this is not a 100% guarantee.
  2. Wear of connecting rod liners, which can lead to rotation and subsequent overhaul. Put the latest revision, the manufacturer is constantly improving them.

To make the motor drive long and well, regularly discuss it, pour normal quality and original oil (not liquid), change with a periodicity of at least once every 7500 km, monitor the state of the catalytic converter at least once every 100 thousand kilometers. It is not a bad option to replace the catalytic converter with a flame arrester in order to avoid getting ceramic dust into the cylinders and not to get to the overhaul. After that, put a cheat or do chip tuning.

Due to the fact that for the Russian market these motors are set to 150 hp (with 165 hp conceived by the manufacturer), you have the opportunity to return their 15 horses in the stall, which may be a good addition for the atmospheric.

For realization of conceived it is necessary to find those who will undertake to flash the control unit and to realize all this in life, having replaced a catalytic converter on a flame arrester. This will give 160-170 hp. You can’t do anything else with this motor, at least not for sane money.
