Kia/Hyundai 2.9 CRDi (J3) engine

From 1999 to 2014, a 2.9 liter diesel engine from Kia and Hyundai specialists was produced. This powertrain was widely used in Kia, Huyndai cars.

From 1999 to 2001, this power unit was equipped with a fuel system with a Bosch pump. Since 2001, the engines were equipped with Common Rail fuel system from Delfi. And this system can not be called good: according to drivers, it is rather capricious, requires fuel of high quality, and besides, it is expensive to maintain: the repair of the fuel system will also have to be spent.

Main 2.9 CRDi engine problems

Motor does not start

In the motor, quick-release couplings fail, losing tightness due to wear. This leads to the fact that the diesel engine due to air suction is tripping, and may also periodically fail to start. Replacing old connections with more resistant hoses and reliable clamps will help.

Motor does not start after warming up with the heater

The problem lies in the incorrect installation of the autonomous heater. It must be installed together with a thermorelay: it opens the circuit of the antifreeze temperature sensor when the temperature drops to minus five. Subsequently, the control unit starts the power unit as in severe frosts, without any problems.

Motor does not gain speed

In the case when the engine does not develop more than three thousand revolutions per minute, it works in emergency mode. To find out why such a problem occurred, it is possible with the help of complex diagnostics. Basically, the problem is caused by the failure of the mass airflow sensor or a break in the wiring to the sensor on the fuel ramp.

Injector circuit error

Kia/Hyundai 2.9 CRDi (J3) engine

The engine going into emergency mode and the fallen thrust signal that there are problems with the injectors in the engine. It is necessary to find the place of short circuit in the “braid” of injectors and restore the damaged insulation. In the event that restoration is not possible, it will be necessary to purchase and install a new “braid”.

EBU problems

The engine’s ECU can fail, which will be signaled by erratic errors of injectors or sensor circuits. It is recommended to immediately check the wiring: if it is in order, then it will be necessary to replace the ECU.

IHI turbine cons

In power units 2.9 CRDi, which were produced until 2006, a Japanese turbocharger IHI is used. It is notable in that it has no controlled geometry, but a bypass valve is installed. The turbine is reliable, it is enough to lubricate the cartridge with oil and use antifreeze.

Brake “frog” problems

If the revs float and the engine trots, but the problems stop when you press the brake pedal, you need to check the “frog” – most likely there was a short circuit.

PHFD worming

The formation of aluminum, steel or black chips – an indicator that cheap fuel is used, or there is a blowout. Chips clogging the fuel system occurs within 20-40 km of travel. Repair of the fuel injector and cleaning of the fuel system will eliminate the problem.

Injector failure

Delphi injectors are quite picky about fuel quality, besides, they need to be pumped: if they are not filled with fuel, the control valves may wedge when starting the power unit. Therefore, quality fuel will extend the service life of injectors up to 150 thousand kilometers.

You can buy Delphi injectors for the engine Kia / Hyundai 2.9 CRDi (J3) in the company “AutoStrong-M”.

Problems with EGR valve

The engine received a simple valve, but not infrequent cases of its depressurization and the passage of gases into the underhood space and salon. But its repair is simple and fast.

Malfunctions of the cylinder head

If you do not replace the tubes of the rear “furnace”, then the engine will remain without antifreeze. Ignoring the problem will lead to the fact that the corroded tubes will start to leak, the level of antifreeze will fall, the engine will overheat, which will cause the breakdown of the cylinder-head gasket.

Hydrocompensators breakdown

Mileage of more than three hundred thousand kilometers leads to the fact that the hydrocompensators fail in the cylinder-head: they wedge or break because of broken springs. The problem will be solved by replacing the cylinder-head components.

Worn oil pump

At significant mileage, the oil pump wears out, which is signaled by a long burning of the low pressure indicator after starting the engine. The problem will be solved by replacing the spare part.

Does Common Rail need to be converted to a mechanical fuel pump?

Often owners of cars with a 2.9 CRDi engine replace Common Rail components with Bosch injectors and fuel injectors from the 1999-2001 model year. With such a task is not difficult to cope independently, it is enough to drill new holes in the front cover of the engine for the pump. Installation of mechanical injectors and fuel wires is simple and unproblematic.

But is there any sense in such a remodeling? Yes, as it is much cheaper than repairing worn out injectors and fuel injectors.
