G4FC engine is famous for its reliability and durability. Timely replacement of oil, chain drive and consumables will ensure long engine operation up to 300 thousand kilometers.
Faults and repair of G4FC 1.6 engine
The G4FC engine was developed as part of the Gamma series and first appeared in Kia and Hyundai cars in December 2006. It differs from its smaller 1.4-liter counterpart only in the crankshaft with an increased piston stroke from 75 mm to 85.4 mm. To install the long-stroke crankshaft in the G4FA block, the long connecting rods had to be replaced with short ones, and the pistons had to be recessed to reduce the compression ratio to an acceptable level.
On top of the block is the head, which does not differ from the G4FA: it is the same twin-shaft, 16-valve with a single CVVT phase shifter on the intake. The only difference is the intake camshaft, otherwise the motors are like two drops of water.
In the timing mechanism used timing chain, which is declared as maintenance-free, in practice is very durable and does not cause problems.
As you know, these motors are not equipped with hydrocompensators, which means that every 95 thousand kilometers you need to adjust valve clearances, if required.
On the inlet there is a conventional manifold, which has no length change systems.
The first versions of the motor (before the era of Rio and Solaris), differed exhaust manifold in the form of a ram’s horn, ignition coils, fuel ramp and minor differences on the head.
Later, namely in 2011, on the basis of G4FC was created its successor from the Gamma II series under the designation G4FG, which has a system of variable valve timing on both camshafts.
Among other things, in Western markets, there are more advanced types of G4FC: with direct injection GDI – G4FD and T-GDI – G4FJ with turbocharging and direct fuel injection.
Problems and disadvantages of KIA-Hyundai G4FC engines
Zadirs
Motors of the first years of production were equipped with a large exhaust manifold “ram’s horn”, but with the transition to Euro 5 econorrhythms, it gave way to a modern roller collector. Since then, the problem with scoring in cylinders due to catalytic converter crumbs has become relevant.
Oil addiction
The cylinder block here is made of aluminum with an open cooling jacket and thin liners, the rigidity of which is not high. And with active operation or regular overheating, cylinders often go ellipse, after which there is a progressive consumption of lubricant.
Low life of the chain
With quiet driving, the grm chain serves quite a lot and usually it is changed closer to 200 000 km. But if the driver constantly revs the engine to high revolutions, the resource drops by half. Also from contamination of lubricant often fails and jams the hydraulic tensioner.
Small breakdowns
About minor problems briefly: often whistles alternator belt because of a weak tensioner, motor supports do not last long, there are often oil leaks from under the valve cover and floating revolutions due to contaminated fuel injectors or throttle unit.
Hyundai-Kia G4FC engine tuning
Chip tuning
Carry out work on the calibration of the motor is the easiest and most harmless thing that can be done in the field of tuning. Companies in this field promise to increase power to 130 or more horsepower. It costs not so much money and you can try it if you want, but the result is unlikely to please you.
To get a driving motor, you need to replace the intake manifold with a receiver from G4FG, change the oil dipstick and guide to the same from G4FG, put the control unit of the system of changing the length of the receiver and you can stop there, getting your ~130 hp. However, this is not all and you can remove 140 hp by putting the intake camshaft from G4FG (stands with modifications), cold intake, exhaust manifold 4-2-1, exhaust diameter 51 mm and adjusting your ECU.
On sale there are wide-phase camshafts Nuzhdin, their exhaust on 63 mm pipe, manifold 4-1 and all this is tuned on the control unit Corvette, as a result we have about 190 hp. If you want and have the money, you can repeat something like this on your car.
