Troubleshooting and repair of G4KD 2.0L engine

G4KD ThetaThe G4KD engine is part of the Theta II family, which replaced the older Beta series motors. This powertrain was developed together with Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. On American cars, it is called the Chrysler world engine, while the Japanese from Mitsubishi have the 4B11. This particular G4KD is a modernized engine of the Magentis G4KA of the Theta generation.

It uses an aluminum cylinder block with a height of 220 mm with a cylinder diameter of 86 mm. In this block installed crankshaft with 4 counterweights and a stroke of 86 mm, connecting rods length of 149 mm, and compression height of the piston 27.5 mm. As a result, we get 2 liters of volume.

Such a block is covered with an aluminum 16-valve head with a system of continuous variable valve timing CVVT, phase shifter is on the intake shaft. The shafts are hollow and rotate with the help of timing chain, which serves +/- 150 thousand kilometers. There are no hydrocompensators, so once in 95 thousand km, if there are characteristic noises, it is necessary to adjust valve clearances or at least check them. Valve clearances on the inlet are 0.2 mm, on the outlet 0.3 mm for a cold motor.

There is a two stage VIS manifold on the intake.

Comparing G4KD and G4KA, we can note a new cylinder block and connecting rod and piston group, significantly improved head, other intake and exhaust manifolds, attachments, electronics, in general, the motor has changed significantly and became more powerful – 165 hp.

On the basis of this motor was created engine G4KE (Theta II), with a working volume of 2.4 liters. Also on the basis of G4KD were created turbocharged G4KF, G4KH and G4KL, which are close to 4B11T from Evolution X.

Reliability and problems of G4KD engines

  1. Knocking. noise on cold and hot, high oil consumption. This is a known mass problem of G4KD, which occurs due to the design features of the motor. First the engine starts knocking on cold, then always. Usually it occurs after 100-150 thousand kilometers of mileage (at times earlier), scoring forms in the cylinders, sometimes very deep. The chips get into the oil and spoil not only the CPG, but also the oil pump, camshafts and so on. The result is always the same – overhaul with boring under the repair size or, in case of deep scoring, lasing of the block under a standard piston. Also when repairing should be installed oil injectors.
  2. Dieseling before warm-up. This is common for G4KD – a feature of the engine.
  3. Aconditioner compressor bearing whistling, change it and there is no problem.
  4. Crackling, this sound is present on all G4KD and makes owners nervous, calm down, this is the work of injectors.
  5. Vibrations at 1000-1200 rpm, change the plugs, drive on.

Among other things, there are various hissing sounds, they are produced by the gasoline pump. The motor itself is not the quietest, be prepared for sounds. It is also worth monitoring the condition of the catalytic converter and you need to replace or cut it out in time, otherwise its dust will get into the cylinders and there will be scoring. Usually its service life is about 100-150 thousand kilometers.

All owners know the fact that there are turbo versions of this motor and people are itching to install a supercharger, but the T-GDI motor seriously differs from a simple G4KD, the presence of direct fuel injection, the spindle, which by design resembles the piston from the Lancer Evolution X and a number of other changes. You can build a G4KD on a turbo, but the cost of work to refine the motor, suspension, brakes will be prohibitively high – it is not rational to do all this.
