The SkyActiv-G engine has been produced at Hiroshima Plant from 2011 to the present. This engine features an aluminum cylinder block and an injection power system. It is an inline four-cylinder unit with four valves per cylinder. The piston stroke is 91.2 mm and the cylinder diameter is 83.5 mm. The compression ratio of the engine is specified as 13 (14).

The engine displacement is 1997 cubic centimeters. The engine output is 165 horsepower at 6000 rpm and the torque is 208 Nm at 4000 rpm.

It is recommended to use fuel with an octane rating of 95 to run the engine. It also complies with Euro 4 environmental standards. Fuel consumption for the Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv model is 8.1 l/100 km in the city, 4.8 l/100 km on the highway and 6.0 l/100 km in mixed mode.

Recommended oils for the Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv engine include 0W-20 and 5W-30, and it has a capacity of 4.2 liters. It is recommended to pour about 4.0 liters when changing the oil. The oil change is done every 15000 km under normal operating conditions, although it is better to shorten this interval to 7500 km under severe conditions.

According to the factory, the life of the SkyActiv-G engine is not specified, as well as its operating temperature. Regarding tuning, there is also no information on the potential and possibility of increasing power without loss of life. The SkyActiv-G engine is installed in Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and Mazda CX-5 models.

Mazda SkyActiv 2.0 engine troubleshooting and repair

The Mazda SkyActiv 2.0 engine belongs to the first generation SkyActiv engine introduced in 2011. This 2.0-liter motor replaced Ford’s Duratec 2.0, which was previously fitted to Mazda under the name MZR LF. The SkyActiv 2.0 powertrain has a good power output of 165 hp, but in some markets it has been reduced to 150 hp due to tax restrictions, which combined with improved fuel economy makes it more attractive.

This motor is equipped with all modern systems, including direct fuel injection, “Dual S-VT” dual-shaft variable valve timing system, and hydrocompensators for automatic valve clearance adjustment. To ensure operation at high compression ratio (14), a lightweight piston group is used with pistons having an optimized shape to improve combustion. A 4-2-1 manifold with catalytic converter is installed at the exhaust, and its length is designed to ensure efficient cylinder scavenging. All of this allows the SkyActiv 2.0 engine to run at a compression ratio of 14 using 95 gasoline without detonation.

According to owners’ feedback, the SkyActiv engine can be a little noisy at idle and cause vibrations, but these phenomena disappear when warmed up.

Other serious problems are not revealed, and in general, the motor is assessed as quite reliable. Nevertheless, the portal WikiMotors closely follows the SkyActiv family, and in case of new information, you will be the first to know about it.

In general, the SkyActiv 2.0 engine on the Mazda 3 shows itself very vividly and is a more attractive option compared to the Sky 1.5 model. If the motor is chosen for larger cars, such as the Mazda CX-5 or Mazda 6, then preference should be given to the 2.5-liter representative of the SkyActiv series.

Chip tuning SkyActiv 2.0

Everyone knows that the European SkyActiv 2.0 engine produces 165 hp, but in some countries its power is reduced to 150 hp. However, according to the results of measurements, this reduction in power is more about paper indicators. Therefore, to increase the power to 170 hp without compromising the resource, you can remove the catalytic converter and perform chip tuning. Installing a turbo on the SkyActiv is impossible because of the high compression ratio and the need to replace the pistons with forged ones, which will make it a regular 2-liter motor. Any attempts to supercharge the SkyActiv would have serious consequences for the engine.

MOTOR RATING: 4+
