Reliability and problems of the AMG M139 engine

This engine was introduced in 2019 for the Mercedes-Benz AMG 45, inheriting the place of the AMG M133 and based on the M260 engine. It features a cylinder block similar to the M260, made of aluminum and closed, with cast iron liners coated with antifriction material to reduce friction, as well as a lightweight forged crankshaft with a 92 mm piston stroke and 83 mm diameter forged pistons, which increases the compression ratio to 9 (compared to 8.6 in the M133), with a total displacement of 2 liters. The sump is fitted with anti-sump plates.

The engine head is twin-shaft, 16-valve, with enlarged exhaust valves, phase shifters on the intake and exhaust shafts, as well as Camtronic variable valve lift system on the exhaust shaft. The camshafts are driven by a timing chain.

The engine is equipped with dual injection: the main direct injection with piezo nozzles and additional, which is activated at high loads or at speeds above 3500 rpm. It also features an electric pump, a three-circuit cooling system and, unlike the M260, the head is turned, with the intake at the front and the exhaust at the rear, which allowed the intake tract to be shortened.

To achieve over 400 hp with 2 liters of displacement, a Borg Warner twin-channel roller twinscroll turbine was chosen. It generates a pressure of 1.9 bar on the regular version, delivering 387 hp and 480 Nm of torque, and 2.1 bar on the AMG S version, resulting in 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The motor can go up to 7,200 rpm.

The injection is controlled by a new Bosch MG1 ECU, more advanced and faster than previous models in the MED series. Also new is the installation of a GPF particulate filter on the exhaust (analogous to the DPF, but for gasoline engines).

The charge air cooling system includes a Killer chiller system (air conditioning evaporator installed in the intake tract), which allows the intake air temperature to be maintained above +20° C even under continuous loads at ambient temperatures between +30 and +35° C.

Problems and drawbacks of Mercedes M139 engines

Since this engine is brand new, it is too early to talk about its problems and disadvantages. The following are known at this point:

1.Problems with the seal on the air conditioning radiator. The factory has issued a special bulletin on this problem. If you encounter this problem, contact an official service center, where you will have the seal ring replaced and the system recharged.

2.Cooling system tube leakage at the connection between the plastic tube and the hose. This problem is also recognized by the factory and the supplier has been replaced. Authorized dealers are willing to replace defective parts with no problem.

3.Problems with the clamp on the pipe leading to the bypass valve. If your car is under Stage 1 / 2 / 3 tuning, it is recommended that you replace the factory Norma spring-loaded screw type with a clamp. There have been cases of the hose disconnecting, which can lead to the car turning into an atmospheric. This malfunction is better prevented in advance to avoid inconvenience.

In general, this is a high-tech and powerful engine that requires appropriate care: the use of high-quality gasoline, regular oil changes every 3000-5000 km and the use of only original components.

Chip tuning

The stock car shows pretty impressive numbers, but this is not the limit for the standard turbo. The Stage 1 firmware allows to reach 470 hp and 580 Nm of torque. If the goal is 500 hp, then you need a downpipe with or without a sportcat and an intake with a zero resistance filter. This way you can easily raise the boost pressure to 2.5 bar on Stage 2 and achieve 520 hp and 650 Nm of torque.

A separate headache is the so-called “power control unit” CPC, installed recently on all AMG cars, which does not allow to programmatically request more than 500Nm. Therefore, only less serious tuners can help in achieving the desired power. There are several ways, each of which is unique in its own way, and is, so far, a know-how for each company.
