Reliability, problems and repair of the Mercedes M111 E20 2.0L engine
The new M111 E20 engine appeared in 1992 and gave rise to the next series of four-cylinder Mercedes engines (which included the M111 E18, M111 E22 and M111 E23), the M111 E20 itself replaced the outdated M102 E20. A compact cast iron cylinder block was redesigned for this powertrain generation, with a new crankshaft, connecting rod and piston group and more.
The cylinder head is now 16-valve, dual camshaft (DOHC), with hydrocompensators and electronic fuel injection. The diameter of the intake valves is 35 mm, and the exhaust valves are 31 mm. Along with the atmospheric version, a compressor version M111 E20 ML was produced, where the Eaton M62 Roots compressor was used as a supercharger. The timing drive is chain, the resource of this chain is about 250 thousand kilometers. Engine management system Bosch ME 2.1.
In 2000, the series was subjected to modifications, in the updated engine replaced connecting rods and pistons for increased compression ratio, cylinder block with stiffening ribs, refined cylinder head with modified combustion chambers and channels, individual ignition coils, improved fuel system with new injectors, other plugs, electronic throttle, increased environmental friendliness to Euro 4, compressor versions instead of Eaton M62 received Eaton M45 supercharger and more than 100 other changes received engines, to the name of which the designation EVO was added. The engine management system was replaced by Siemens ME-SIM4.
In 2002, Mercedes-Benz presented the next generation, further development of the family of inline fours under the name M271 and within two years M111 E20 ML gave way to a new M271 E18 ML, with a working volume of 1.8 liters.
Modifications of M111 E20 engines

Problems and disadvantages of Mercedes M111 E20 2 liter engines
- Oil leaks. A popular problem on the 111th series, the cause is the wear of the cylinder-head gasket and is treated by replacing it.
- Loss of power, high fuel consumption. The root of the evil is in the air flow meter, which lives about 100 thousand kilometers. Replace it and the situation will improve.
In addition, M111 engines are characterized by noisy operation, spark plugs do not live long (about 20 thousand km), the pump lives about 100 thousand km, after 200 thousand km there is a great chance of wear of piston skirts, there are often cracks in the exhaust manifold. To this we should add the fact that most of these engines are absolutely worn out and drove all their considerable motor resource, therefore, to the above problems can add any age-related complications. To minimize such troubles, it is necessary to use only quality working fluids and regular maintenance.
Mercedes M111 engine tuning
Compressor
It is most rational to refine the initially powerful compressor version of M111 E20 ML, where the blower pulley is changed to a tuning pulley, a new sports firmware is installed and the power is increased to ~210 hp. With the replacement of the exhaust with a sport exhaust, we get a more aggressive sound, which enhances the feeling of increased dynamics, along with this will add about 5-10 hp. To put a turbine instead of a compressor is not so profitable, for half of the motor will be replaced. It is much easier to buy a powerful contract engine Mercedes V6. The same applies to the tuning of the usual atmospheric M111 E20, here it is not even worth wasting time, only replacement with a powerful motor.
