Reliability, problems and repairs of the Mercedes M119 E42 4.2L engine

The youngest V8 in the M119 family, which in addition to the M119 E42 included the M119 E50, as well as the sporty M119 E60 AMG and M119 E63 AMG. Our variant was intended to replace the long outdated M116, with a working volume of 4.2 liters. The development of the E42 was based on the older five-liter motor, whose cylinder bore was reduced to 92 mm (was 96.5 mm) and a crankshaft with a reduced to 78.9 mm piston stroke (was 85 mm) was installed. The cylinder block is covered with adapted cylinder heads from the M119 E50, with a timing system on the intake shafts and hydrocompensators. Valve diameter remained unchanged: intake 38 mm, exhaust 33 mm.

The timing drive is chain, chain life is 100-150 thousand kilometers. Injection Bosch LH-Jetronic/ME2.0.

The engine was designed for models with index 400, later 420.

The power unit was produced until 1998, but a year earlier Mercedes introduced the next generation M113 E43, which replaced the M119 E42.

M 119 E 42 engine modifications

  • M119.971 (1991 – 1998) – the first version produced in the version without a catalyst, 286 hp at 5700 rpm, torque 410 Nm at 3900 rpm and with a catalyst (CAT), its output is 279 hp at 5700 rpm, torque 410 Nm at 3900 rpm. Compression ratio 11, LH-Jetronic injection. Installed in Mercedes-Benz 400 SE W140, CL420 C140.
  • M119.975 (1992 – 1998) – analog of M119.971 with catalytic converter for Mercedes-Benz E 420/400 E W124.
  • M119.981 (1995 – 1998) – analog of M119.971 with catalytic converter and Bosch ME2.0 injection for Mercedes-Benz CL 420 C140.
  • M119.985 (1996 – 1997) – analog of M 119.981 for Mercedes-Benz E 420 W210.

Problems and disadvantages of Mercedes M119 4.2 l engines

  1. Engine knocking. Extraneous noises are made by hydrocompensators in the absence of oil supply. The problem is solved by replacing the plastic connectors for the oil supply.
  2. Unstable operation, knocking. As a rule, such symptoms are caused by stretched timing chain and it is necessary to check its condition. Chain resource on M119 is about 100, sometimes up to 150 thousand kilometers.

In addition, due to the huge size of the power plant, on W124 the engine occupies an impressive part of the underhood space, increases the overall temperature under the hood and as a consequence there is drying and cracking of wiring, with subsequent troubles. At the same time on W124 and W210 there is a problem of increased wear of engine cushions. Otherwise, the engine is simple, reliable, powerful, tractive, with the use of quality working fluids and timely maintenance, the resource of M119 is about 500 thousand kilometers.

Mercedes M119 engine tuning

Compressor

Similar to the M119 E50, the 4.2-liter motor is refined by two methods:

  • Compressor kit. A kit (e.g. Koenig), injectors, pump from M119 E63 is put on the standard piston system and inflates about 80-100 hp.
  • Buy an engine Mercedes M 113 E 55 AMG / M 119 E 60 AMG.

ENGINE RATING: 5-
