Reliability, problems and repair of the Mercedes M119 E50 5.0 liter engine
The first version in the M119 engine family, developed in 1989 and occupying a place between the younger M119 E42 and the sporty M119 E60 AMG and M199 E63 AMG. The purpose of this engine was to replace the ancient M117 with a displacement of 5 liters. In the new power unit was used aluminum cylinder block with 90 ° camber, alloy pistons, forged connecting rods. The block is covered with two heads made of the same material, two camshafts and 16 valves per each. In the M119 cylinder-head is used a system of changing the phase of timing on the intake shafts and hydrocompensators valve clearances. The diameter of the inlet valves is 38 mm, and the exhaust valves are 33 mm.
The timing drive is chain, chain life is 100-150 thousand kilometers. Injection Bosch KE-Jetronic/LH-Jetronic, later ME 2.0.
The engine was intended for models with the index 500.
The next generation V8, under the name M113 E50, was released in 1998 on the Mercedes S 500/SL 500 and immediately replaced the M119 E50.
Modifications of the M 119 E 50 engines
- M119.960 (1989 – 1992 years.v.) – the first version produced in the version without a catalyst, power of 326 hp at 5700 rpm, torque 480 Nm at 3900 rpm and with a catalyst (CAT), the power of this version 320 hp at 5600 rpm, torque 470 Nm at 3900 rpm. Compression ratio is 10, injection KE-Jetronic. Installed in Mercedes-Benz 500 SL R129.
- M119.970 (1991 – 1998) – analog of M119.960 for Mercedes-Benz S 500/500 SE W140, 500 SEC/S 500 Coupe/CL500 C140. Compression ratio 10, LH-Jetronic injection.
- M119.972 (1992 – 1995) – analog of M119.970 with catalytic converter for Mercedes-Benz SL 500 R129.
- M119.974 (1991 – 1995) – analog of M 119.970 for Mercedes-Benz E 500/500 E W124.
- M119.980 (1993 – 1998) – analog of M 119.970 with Bosch ME 2.0 injection. It was installed on Mercedes-Benz S 500 W140.
- M119.982 (1993 – 1998) – analog of M119.980 for Mercedes-Benz SL 500 R129.
- M119.985 AMG 5.0 (1996 – 1997) – increased compression ratio to 11.2, modified intake, exhaust, replaced camshafts and springs, Bosch LH-Jetronic injection. Power 347 hp at 5750 rpm, torque 480 Nm at 3750 rpm. Installed on the Mercedes-Benz E 50 AMG W210.
Problems and disadvantages of engines Mercedes M119 5.0 liters
- Engine knocking. Extraneous noises are made by hydrocompensators in the absence of oil supply. The problem is solved by replacing the plastic connectors for the oil supply.
- Unstable operation, knocking. As a rule, such symptoms are caused by stretched timing chain and it is necessary to check its condition. Chain resource on M119 is about 100, sometimes up to 150 thousand kilometers.
In addition, due to the huge size of the power plant, on W124 the engine occupies an impressive part of the underhood space, increases the overall temperature under the hood and as a consequence there is drying and cracking of wiring, with subsequent troubles. At the same time on W124 and W210 there is a problem of increased wear of engine cushions. Otherwise, the engine is simple, reliable, powerful, tractive, with the use of quality working fluids and timely maintenance, the resource of M119 is about 500 thousand kilometers.
Mercedes M119 engine tuning
Compressor
Any tuning of M119 is very expensive and unprofitable, initially it is much easier to buy a more powerful engine Mercedes AMG or M 113. However, if for some strange reasons you need to refine the 119th, then the best choice is to install a compressor kit (Koenig for example) on a standard piston, add injectors and pump from M119 E63, it will give about 100 hp. For more output it is necessary to climb into the motor and change the connecting rods with pistons to forged with low compression ratio, after which you can increase the supercharger pressure. Attempts to increase power by increasing the working volume, sports camshafts, refining the cylinder head and other modifications, are extremely unprofitable from a financial point of view.
