Reliability, problems and repair of Mercedes M272 E35 3.5 liter engine

Introduced on the Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 R171 in 2004, the M272 E35 engine was the next step in Mercedes’ V6 swagger and was intended to replace the M112 E32 and M112 E37. In addition to the 3.5-liter directly, the new family included the M272 E25 and M272 E30, with displacements of 2.5 and 3 liters respectively.

The new 272-series motors were developed on the basis of the M112 E32, aluminum cylinder block has the same 90° camber with the same intercylinder distance of 106 mm. Siluminous liners under the piston diameter of 92.6 mm, a new crankshaft with a stroke of 86 mm, lightweight pistons, light forged connecting rods and a balancing shaft in the camber. The cylinder heads are aluminum, with 4 valves per cylinder and two camshafts (DOHC), the intake valve stems have been reduced from 7 mm to 6 mm, the diameter of the intake valves is 39.5 mm, the exhaust valves 30 mm. The M272 engine has a stepless variable valve timing system on both shafts, hydrocompensators, two-stage intake manifold with variable length.

The timing is driven by a double roller chain with a service life of about 150 thousand kilometers. The control system is Bosch ME 9.7.

The engine was designed for Mercedes models with the index 350.

Together with M272 E35, related V8s were produced: M273 E46 and M273 E55.

The new version of the 3.5-liter V6 from the Stuttgart manufacturer was born in 2011 and was called M276 DE35, it was this power unit within two years replaced the M272 E35 on all produced cars.

Problems and disadvantages of Mercedes M272 3.5 liter engines

  • Dieselitis, Check Engine light, errors 1200 and 1208. The most common cause causing these troubles on the M272, it is the wear of the sprockets of the balancer shaft. Repair is conjugated with the removal of the engine (on the unified M273 do not need to remove, and instead of the balancer shaft (which is not) changes the intermediate gear timing chain), the replacement of the timing chain, tensioner and calipers, respectively, and the cost of repair is very unpleasant. Most prone to this trouble engines manufactured before 2007.
  • Oil leaks. Check the plastic plugs of the cylinder heads, perhaps they require replacement. Usually their service life is about 50 thousand kilometers.

In addition, after 70-100 thousand kilometers, the intake manifold flaps die, which is expressed by the engine trojan and to eliminate it requires replacement of the entire assembly, in 2007, this defect was eliminated. At the same time, catalytic converters die quickly from low fuel quality and the problem is solved by replacing them with flame arrestors. In compliance with all the requirements of the manufacturer and the use of quality working fluids, the engine M272 (younger than 2007) is quite good, reliable and will not cause much trouble.

Mercedes M272 engine tuning

Chip tuning. Compressor

The easiest way to slightly increase power is chip tuning + exhaust. It is enough to go to a tuning studio, remove catalytic converters, put a low resistance filter, pour sports firmware and get about 15-20 hp. Having installed sport camshafts with phase 268/268 lift 11/11 (Kleemann), we will get about 20-25 hp. It is senseless to refine further in the atmospheric version, as the car will lose considerably in convenience of moving around the city. Further ways:

  1. Buy a Mercedes with a V8 M273 engine.
  2. Buy a compressor kit from Kleemann/Lotec, etc. Such kits, due to low pressure, are installed on a standard piston and allow you to increase power to 370-380 hp. The disadvantage of this method is the high price.
