The Mercedes M270 series gasoline engines, produced from 2011 to 2019, were installed in vehicles with transversely mounted engines, such as the A-Class and B-Class. For models with a longitudinal arrangement of the motor, similar units were developed under the index M274. Below are the main technical specifications of the M270 engine versions with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 liters.
Mercedes M270 engine specifications
Modification | Type | Volume (cm³) | Power (hp) | Torque (Nm) | Compression Ratio | Environmental regulations |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
M 270 DE 16 AL red. | Royal | 1595 | 102 – 122 | 180 – 200 | 10.3 | Euro 5/6 |
M 270 DE 16 AL | Ready | 1595 | 156 | 250 | 10.3 | EURO 5/6 |
M 270 DE 20 AL | Ready | 1991 | 156 – 218 | 270 – 350 | 9.8 | Euro 5/6 |
The weight of the M270 engine is 137 kg, making it compact enough for passenger cars.
Engine construction
M270 power units are built using modern technology:
- 4-cylinder aluminum block with cast iron liners;
- 16-valve aluminum head with hydrocompensators;
- Direct fuel injection with piezo injectors;
- Turbocharger with air intercooler;
- Fasoregulators on both camshafts;
- Variable capacity oil pump and electronic thermostat.
Engine Applications
The M270 series engines were used on the following models:
- Mercedes A-Class W176 (2012-2018)
- Mercedes B-Class W246 (2011-2018)
- CLA-Class C117 (2013-2018)
- GLA-Class X156 (2013-2019)
- Infiniti Q30 and QX30 (2015-2019)
Pros and cons of the engines
Benefits:
- Economy for a motor of this class.
- Good availability of service centers and spare parts.
- The availability of a large experience in repair.
- Hydrocompensators make operation easier.
Disadvantages:
- Problems with phase adjusters.
- Fast stretching of the timing chain.
- Problems with reliability of thermostat and water pump.
- Sensitivity of injectors to low-quality fuel.

Typical M270 engine faults
Phase adjusters cracking
In motors up to 2014, the phasoregulators quickly failed and began to crack, then they were updated and the problem began to appear much later, but has not disappeared. The timing chain is not distinguished by a high resource, usually it is changed once every 100-150 thousand km.
Displacement of the pulse disk
In the engines of this family, the impulse disk is pressed on the camshaft and gradually shifts at each start. Especially accelerates the process stretched chain. It is for this reason that there is a problem with starting the engine up to complete failure.
Destruction of pistons
In 2015, the power units of this series received a different firmware and became more economical, but at once there were appeals to replace destroyed pistons due to detonation. Also low-quality fuel greatly reduces the life of direct injection piezo nozzles.
Engine overheating
It is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the cooling system of this unit, since the head here leads very quickly and even from not very long overheating. This problem is aggravated by the presence of not the most reliable thermostat and water pump.
Other breakdowns
Regularly there are leaks due to a jammed crankcase ventilation valve, as well as from under the gasket of the heat exchanger or on the front oil seal of the crankshaft. Due to broken wiring, the variable displacement oil pump valve hangs up, as well as leaky fuel hoses, stuck turbine actuator and rapidly clogging adsorber.
Engine life
The manufacturer declares the life of the M270 engine up to 220 000 km, but with proper maintenance the engine can serve up to 300 000 km.
