Mini B47C20A

The B47C20A engine was introduced in 2014 and is fitted to the entire third-generation Mini range, including models such as the Clubman F54 and Countryman F60. This engine is used in some Mini models such as the Mini Cooper D and Mini Cooper SD, as well as other BMW vehicles. It replaced the previous generation of diesel engines and has become an important element in the company’s strategy to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

The engine is available in two main versions: Cooper D and Cooper SD, which differ in power and a number of characteristics.

Part of BMW’s global modular engine platform

Mini B47C20A

The B47C20A, like the other engines in the B47 series, is part of a modular platform developed by BMW for use in various models and brands, including Mini. This modular concept involves the use of standard components to create gasoline and diesel engines with different displacements, which simplifies production and reduces costs. The B47 series engines are characterized by a high degree of parts commonality with other engines, making them flexible in application.

Application of B47C20A Engine

B47C20A engines are installed in the following Mini vehicles:

  1. Mini Clubman 2 (F54): 2015 – present
  2. Mini Hatch 5-door 3 (F55): 2014 – 2019
  3. Mini Hatch 3-door 3 (F56): 2014 – 2019
  4. Mini Cabrio 3 (F57): 2016 – 2019
  5. Mini Countryman 2 (F60): 2017 – current

Main drawbacks and breakdowns of the B47C20A engine

Despite their reliability, B47C20A engines have a few vulnerabilities:

  1. EGR valve (AGR) problems: in some countries there have been recall campaigns to replace the valves due to their unreliability.
  2. Timing chain: although the chains in these engines have become more reliable compared to the previous generation N47, they still require replacement at around 200,000 km
  3. Vortex flaps: often covered in soot and jammed.
  4. Problems with the piezo injectors and particulate filter: these elements often require maintenance or replacement.

The B47C20A engine continues to be popular due to its power, economy and relatively high reliability. However, owners should pay attention to regular maintenance and control of problematic components.
