Mini N47C16A 1.6 Turbo Diesel engine

The 1.6-liter Mini Clubman D N47C16A diesel engine was produced from 2010 to 2017 and fitted to second-generation Mini models such as the Clubman R55, Hatch R56, Countryman R60 and Paceman R61. The engine is equipped with Common Rail fuel injection system and turbocharging, which provides good dynamic performance and low fuel consumption.

The N47C16A engine is part of the N47 series, which includes diesel engines with different displacements ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. The N47 series was developed by BMW for use in its models as well as Mini cars. This range of engines replaces the older M47 series and is significantly more efficient in terms of fuel economy and emissions.

N47C16A engine problems and defects

  1. GM timing chain. One of the most notorious problems with this engine is the timing chain pulling out, which can occur as early as 100,000 kilometers.
  2. Crankshaft Pulley Damping. Also at a mileage of about 100,000 km it is often necessary to replace the crankshaft damper pulley.
  3. Antifreeze leaks. Coolant leaks are not uncommon due to cracks in the cooling system tube seals.
  4. Inlet flaps. These components of the intake manifold are prone to clogging and jamming, which reduces the efficiency of the engine.
  5. Clogging of the particulate filter and EGR valve. As with many diesel engines, clogged particulate filters and EGR valves often cause problems for owners.

Mini and BMW cars with N47 engines

Cars equipped with the N47C16A engine, such as the Mini Cooper D and BMW 1 Series, have received awards and positive reviews for fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. These vehicles have often received awards related to efficiency, especially in the compact and city car segment.

  • Green Car of the Year: Mini cars with diesel engines (including the N47C16A) have been honored in various environmental competitions for their low emissions and fuel economy.
  • What Car? Green Awards: Mini Cooper D equipped with the N47 engine was recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly cars on the market due to the highly efficient performance of the diesel engine.
  • Auto Express Awards: Mini Cooper D equipped with the N47C16A engine has repeatedly received positive reviews and awards for its dynamics and performance in the compact car segment.

The Mini N47C16A engine is a reliable and economical unit when properly and regularly maintained. However, an important aspect of its operation is timely replacement of the timing chain and control of the cooling system.
