The Mini Cooper SD N47C20A diesel engine was produced from 2010 to 2017 and was fitted to second generation Mini cars. This powertrain was developed on the basis of BMW N47 series diesel engine and was used on such models as Clubman R55, Countryman R60 and others. The engine is equipped with Common Rail system and turbocharging, which provides high power and economy.
Many BMW and Mini sports models equipped with diesel engines used exactly N47C20A due to its powerful torque and ability to accelerate quickly without losing fuel efficiency. In particular, the Mini Cooper SD with this engine demonstrated excellent dynamic performance.

N47C20A engine problems and defects
- G timing chain. One of the main problems of the engine is the rapid wear of the timing chain. In some cases, it is stretched out by as early as 100,000 kilometers, requiring replacement. Chain wear could lead to serious engine failures, which was the subject of several recall campaigns. BMW subsequently improved the design, addressing this problem on later models.
- Crankshaft damper pulley. This element often needs replacement at about the same mileage as the timing chain.
- Antifreeze leaks. Many vehicles experience coolant leaks due to cracks in the cooling system seals.
- Coking of the vortex flaps. The intake manifold vortex flaps quickly become clogged, causing them to jam.
- Particulate filter and EGR valve problems. Particulate filter clogging and EGR valve problems are among the most common failures of diesel engines in this series.
The Mini N47C20A 2.0 Turbo Diesel engine is a powerful and economical unit, but requires regular servicing to prevent problems with the timing, cooling system and intake.
