Mitsubishi 4G15 engine troubleshooting and repair
The popular one and a half 4G15, produced for more than 20 years, is, roughly speaking, a bored-out version of the 4G13 engine. The cylinder block was taken from a 1.3 liter motor and bored for a 75.5mm piston (it was 71mm). The cylinder head was initially used SOHC 12V single-shaft with 12 valves, later DOHC 16V, twin-shaft 16-valve.
There are no hydrocompensators on 4G15, the motor requires adjustment of valves once in 90 thousand kilometers, usually no one does it and adjust only when there are foreign knocks. Valve clearances on a hot engine, intake valve 0.15 mm, exhaust 0.25 mm, on a cold engine, intake 0.07 mm, exhaust 0.17 mm. In the drive timing belt is used, it serves about 100,000 km, if broken will bend the valves.
Some modifications were equipped with GDI direct injection, some versions of 4G15 had MIVEC, and sports motors together with MIVEC received a block with oil injectors and supercharger (4G15T). Such engines were installed on Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart and Smart Forfour Brabus, developed power from 147 to 180 hp on Colt, and 177 hp on Smart.
In addition, on the basis of 4G15/4G13 was created 1.6-liter motor 4G18, about it a separate mention.
In 2004, the 4G15 engine received a successor and began to slowly give way under the hood to a new engine 4A91.
Faults 4G15 and their causes
- Excessive idle, floating revs. Very common problem, sooner or later appears on all 4G1 engines. All to blame for the throttle valve of a peculiar design not withstanding long operation. The problem is solved by buying a new original throttle unit, or the same unit, but modified by third-party manufacturers, where the factory wear problem is solved.
- Vibrations. A common problem of Orion engines that has no definite solution. First you need to check the condition of the cushions, often this is where the problem lies. The issue can be solved by slightly raising the idle speed.
- Difficult starting, does not start 4G15. Check the gasoline pump, if there is frost outside, then, most likely, the plugs are flooded. Do not be surprised, to operate 4G13-4G15-4G18 in serious minus temperatures is not the best idea.
- Oil burn. The problem occurs on motors with mileage over 200 thousand kilometers (on 4G18 motors after 100 thousand kilometers). It is solved by replacing the piston rings, or better overhaul.
In general, the motor of average reliability and breakdowns are not rare here, in addition to the above popular problems, there are a number of smaller ones, and the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants protects from them only partially.
When buying a car it is desirable to choose an engine of another series, for example, if it is Lancer (most often), look in the direction of 4G63, as a more reliable and high-quality power unit.
Mitsubishi 4G15 engine tuning
Turbo on 4G15
The only and more or less reasonable way to increase the power of 4G15 is to install a turbine, but it will not be cheap. It won’t come cheap without a supercharger either, sport shafts, intake and exhaust, Greddy E-Manage will cost a solid amount of money, so be prepared to pay money.
It will be easier to order a turbo kit from ebay, put it on the factory piston. It is desirable to use a 16 valve twin-shaft DOHC, replace the pump with walbro 255, injectors from 4G64 275 cc or better, exhaust straight on 63 mm pipe, adjust for E-Manage, blow 0.5 bar and drive while driving. To get serious power, factory pistons are sent to the trash, instead of them forged with a puddle under low compression ratio, standard connecting rods are also not suitable, change to H-shaped, will not hurt and oil injectors. Not standard bottom gives the opportunity to blow up to 350 horsepower, further under the replacement of the crankshaft. At similar budgets it is easier to initially buy a contract engine 4G63 from Evolution and blow in full growth.
