Mitsubishi 4G18 engine troubleshooting and repair

The largest representative of Mitsbishi Orion line, 1.6 liter engine 4G18 is created on the same cylinder block as 4G13/4G15, but our engine has a long-stroke crankshaft (stroke 87.3 mm vs. 82 mm in the younger models) and bored block for 76 mm piston. The head is single-shaft 16-valve (SOHC 16V), there are hydrocompensators, rare versions go without them. In the timing belt is used, the service life of which is about 90 thousand kilometers, when breaking, often bends valves.

In general, the engine is as simple as low-volume representatives of the 4G1 series, no ultra-modern systems.

In 2010, the successor of this engine was released – 4A92, from a new series Mitsubishi 4A9, details on this motor wait in the near future.

Faults 4G18 and their causes

In terms of faults, the motor copies the 1.5-liter 4G15, the description of which can be found here, with a small peculiarity. The matter is the early seizure of piston rings, on average after 100 thousand kilometers. The reason is a miscalculation in the cooling system, so oil build-up for 4G18 is a typical case…

Turbine on the 4G18

The only and more or less reasonable way to increase the power of 4G18 is to install a turbine, but it will not be cheap. It won’t come cheap without a supercharger either, sport shafts, intake and exhaust, Greddy E-Manage will cost a solid amount of money, so be prepared to pay money.

It will be easier to order a turbo kit from ebay, put it on the factory piston. It is desirable to use a 16 valve twin-shaft DOHC, replace the pump with walbro 255, injectors from 4G64 275 cc or better, exhaust straight on 63 mm pipe, adjust for E-Manage, blow 0.5 bar and drive while driving. To get serious power, factory pistons are sent to the trash, instead of them forged with a puddle under low compression ratio, standard connecting rods are also not suitable, change to H-shaped, will not hurt and oil injectors. Non-standard bottom gives an opportunity to blow up to 350 horsepower, further under the replacement of the crankshaft … At such budgets it is easier to initially buy a contract engine and blow in full growth, or the whole Evolution.

MOTOR RATING: 4-
