Reliability, problems and repairs of the 4M41 engine

In 1999, a new 3.2-liter diesel engine 4M41 was developed for the Mitsubishi Pajero 3. Mitsubishi 4M40 was taken as a basis, in which they increased the cylinder diameter from 95 mm to 98.5 mm. In the cylinder block installed crankshaft with a stroke of 105 mm instead of 100 mm on the 4M40, the height of pistons decreased to 47.5 mm. As a result, we have a 4-cylinder diesel engine with a working volume of 3.2 liters.

The block is covered with a new aluminum head with direct fuel injection. There are two camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. The diameter of inlet valves is 33 mm, exhaust valves – 31 mm, and the thickness of the valve stem is 6.5 mm.

Check and, if necessary, adjust the valves after every 15 thousand kilometers. Valve clearances on cold are as follows: intake 0.1 mm, exhaust 0.15 mm.

The camshaft is rotated by a single-row timing chain, which is not as reliable as on 4M40, and begins to make noise closer to 200 thousand kilometers.

This is a turbodiesel and here initially there was a turbine MHI TF035HL.

As a result of all changes relative to the old diesel 4M40, it was possible to achieve an increase in power and torque throughout the range, improved environmental performance and reduced fuel consumption. Power reached 165 hp at 4000 rpm and torque 351 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Since September 2006, the production of 4M41 version with Common rail and IHI RHV5S turbine with variable geometry began. Engineers refined the intake ducts, installed a new intake manifold with swirl valves, changed the shape of the combustion chamber, improved the EGR system. This increased the ecological class and added power, now its 175 hp at 3800 rpm and torque of 382 Nm at 2000 rpm.

In 2010 went 4M41 with modified IHI RHV5S turbines with variable geometry. Power increased to 200 hp at 3,800 rpm and torque to 441 Nm at 2,000 rpm.

Starting in 2015, Mitsubishi is replacing the 3.2-liter 4M41 diesels with the more compact 2.4-liter 4N15.

  1. Transmission timing chain noise. Usually it appears at mileage of 150-200 thousand kilometers and indicates that you need to change the chain before it broke.
  2. Does not start, smoke, lost power. It is necessary to look in the direction of the fuel injector, most likely your low-quality diesel fuel has killed it. Usually it serves +/- 300 thousand kilometers or more.
  3. Whistling. Probably, the stretched alternator belt is whistling. Usually its replacement or tightening saves.
  4. Also about every 100 thousand kilometers crankshaft pulley falls apart.
  5. Crankshaft pulley.

The injectors live more than 100 thousand km, the resource of the turbine is about 300 thousand km, but can go more. Every 40-50 thousand kilometers you need to clean the EGR valve, from low fuel quality, it quickly becomes clogged and clogs the intake manifold with carbon deposits. Some owners do more radical, and silence EGR.

To make your diesel 4M41 live long and happy, it is important to pour good fuel, quality oil and regularly maintain the motor. In this case, it will drive almost without problems, the resource of 4M41 in good conditions can pass over 400 thousand kilometers.

Tuning the 4M41 engine

Chip tuning

Chipping an old and worn out motor is usually not good for you, you need to think carefully before you put extra load on your 4M41. For fresh versions, you can flash the engine with 165 hp to 190 hp, torque will increase to 410-420 Nm. The 190-200 hp models can be flashed to 240 hp at 3500 rpm and torque will reach 500 Nm at 2000 rpm.
