Main engine problems and shortcomings

  • Adjustment of valve thermal clearances. Every 45,000 kilometers, it is necessary to perform valve clearance adjustment, which requires removing the injectors, which increases the complexity and cost of maintenance.

Piezo injectors and their problems

One of the key technologies used in the 4N14 engine are piezo injectors. They provide more precise and faster fuel injection control than conventional injectors, which improves engine economy and environmental friendliness. However, their main problem is their high sensitivity to diesel fuel quality.

Piezo injectors are difficult to repair and can fail when using poor quality fuel. Replacing these injectors is an expensive procedure, which adds to the operating costs for owners of vehicles with the 4N14 engine.

Variable Geometry Turbine

Another feature of this engine is the presence of a variable geometry turbine (VGT). This turbine allows an optimal boost level to be maintained at different loads, which improves engine performance, especially at low speeds. However, like injectors, the variable geometry turbine is sensitive to fuel quality. Bad fuel causes clogging of the turbine’s mechanisms, which can cause a reduction in power and the need for repairs.

Particulate Filter and Maintenance

The particulate filter fitted to the 4N14 cleans soot from the exhaust gases, making the engine comply with the strict EURO 5 and EURO 6 environmental standards. However, clogging of the particulate filter reduces engine power and puts more strain on the engine’s systems. An important aspect is the need to burn the filter regularly, which reduces the likelihood of clogging.
