The N16B16A engine was developed as part of a collaboration between BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën and was fitted to the entire second-generation Mini range. This 1.6-liter engine was produced in England from 2010 to 2017 and was offered in two main modifications: the One and the Cooper. A similar engine was used on Peugeot and Citroën models under the EP6C index.
The N16B16A engine is an atmospheric motor with Valvetronic system, which allows more efficient control of the intake valves, and with Vanos phase controllers on the intake and exhaust.

Disadvantages and typical problems of the N16B16A engine
Despite improvements over its N12 predecessor, the N16B16A engine also had a number of weaknesses:
- GM timing chain and tensioner: Low chain and tensioner life, often requiring replacement before 100,000 km.
- Valvetronic system and Vanos phase controllers: Prone to failure, which can lead to erratic engine performance.
- Oil consumption and intake coking: This engine family is prone to increased oil consumption and intake deposits.
- Thermostat and water pump: Short-lived components that require regular inspection.
- Gasket problems: One of the engine’s features is the risk of oil leaks through leaking oil pan seals.
Recommendations for operation
To maintain normal engine operation, it is recommended that:
- Change the oil at least every 7,000 km
- Replacing the timing chain before 100,000 km, especially if there are noises.
- Monitor the condition of the thermostat and pump and avoid engine overheating.
These measures will avoid most problems and extend the life of the N16B16A motor.
