QG18DE engine troubleshooting and repair
Designed by Aichi Machine Industry, the QG18DE engine replaced the SR18DE and is the same 1.6L QG16DE, but with an increased cylinder diameter from 76 mm to 80 mm. Otherwise, the engine is identical to its 1.6-liter counterpart (and QG15DE), the same CVTC single-shaft timing system, timing chain, intake manifold with swirl flaps, etc. are used.
There are no hydrocompensators on QG18DE, so once in 100 thousand km, please visit the service for adjustment with adjusting washers. The timing chain is not too durable, over time the car will start to twitch, the idle will float, this is a sign that you need to go to the store for a new chain. In addition, there are problems with the idle valve gasket, everyone eventually starts leaking antifreeze directly to the engine control unit with the most pleasant consequences. The issue is solved by replacing the gasket of the idle valve. Engine QG18DE likes to eat oil, it is its peculiarity, usually it is up to 0,5 liters per 1000 km, but there are cases of increase up to 1 liter per 1000 km and even more. In case of exceeding the threshold of 500gr/1000 km, you need to contact the service.
Teeth timing chain
The timing chain on the Japanese engine is not eternal. In the course of operation it stretches and starts to rattle. The more the timing chain is stretched, the “brighter” the engine malfunctions. In particular, it begins to “float” revolutions. Usually the Nissan 1.8 engine chain has to be replaced by the mileage of 150 000 km. By the way, the Nissan engine uses a plate toothed chain (Morse chain).
Why does the Nissan engine consumes oil ?
The family includes engines with a volume of 1.3 to 1.8 liters. And to be fair, we note that all of them are “lovers” to eat oil. It is interesting, whether we will find signs of oil addiction in our unit?
The thing is that restyled engines, released in 2003, were noted for their special “oil appetite”. At the height of the problem, cunning engineers and servicemen released information that oil consumption up to 500 grams per 1000 km is not a warranty case. If the engine started to consume more – it was replaced under warranty. However, even on a new engine the problem of oil consumption began to appear at a mileage of 15 000 km.
Decoction, replacement of the membrane (breather) of the crankcase ventilation system, replacement or cutting of the catalytic converter do not affect the oil consumption of QG series engines.
In general, the QG18DE motor is nothing special, and therefore it is difficult to expect big troubles from it. Nevertheless, some features of this motor entail a large investment in repairs.
Wear and seizure of piston rings
On the disassembled Nissan 1.8 (QG18DE) engine, we found signs of oil glut. Firstly, the oil rings on all pistons have lodged. Secondly, on the heat belt and on the surface of the piston under the rings there are traces of burning oil.
“Cure” high oil appetite of all engines of QG series can be only one way – to replace the oil rings. And Nissan has not released any alternative improved rings, so the new ones will wear out, and the increased oil consumption will return.
However, among the QG engines there are some that have successfully passed more than 100,000 km without noticeable oil consumption. Thus, this problem is not systematic, but still occurs on most engines.
Other weak points of the Nissan 1.8 (QG18DE) engine.
In the Nissan motor quite often there are other malfunctions. For example, the block head gasket often burns through. In the plastic valve cover, the glands sealing the candle channels flow. The gasket located next to the throttle valve idle valve leaks antifreeze, which drips directly onto the electronic engine control unit.
The motor is quite normal, nothing outstanding, no nanotechnologies, if it does not eat oil, it will serve for a long time. Motor resource of QG18DE is high, go 250-300 thousand kilometers and more, of course, with timely maintenance and care.

Chip tuning Nissan QG18
Motors delivered to the CIS countries are a little squeezed and instead of the prescribed 128 hp give out 116, you can knock out the catalytic converter, flash and restore justice. You can replace the exhaust with a straight-through exhaust with a 4-2-1 spider, make porting of the cylinder-head, flash and get about 140-145 atmospheric forces. To get more impressive numbers you need evil camshafts, they are not on sale, so the next step will be turbocharging.
QG18DE turbo / QG18DET
This engine quite well tolerates the supercharger, standard piston keeps up to 200 hp, but for a serious project, it’s better to replace the CpG forged with a compression ratio of about 8. On QG18DE on sale there are turbo kits based on various turbines, most often it is Garrett T3, buy and install, put a reinforced CpG, injectors 440cc and higher, more productive gasoline pump, exhaust on a pipe with a diameter of 63 mm, customize online. This is in brief, you can still do porting of the cylinder head, it will give us an additional 5-10% of power. How much power we will get depends on the type of turbine used, in any case it will be above 200 hp. The car will go well, but to realize this is quite expensive, naturally the resource will fall, of course, iron stability will not get and of course you need to refine the rest of the car, you need this or not to decide only you.
