Nissan VH41DE engine troubleshooting and repair

In 1991, the VH41DE engine was developed for the Nissan Cima automobile. This engine was based on the larger 4.5 liter VH45DE. This engine is the same V-shaped 8-cylinder aluminum cylinder block with a 90° camber angle. Cylinder diameter remained the same as on the VH45 – 93 mm, but the piston stroke was reduced from 82.7 mm to 76 mm. The connecting rods remained the same 147 mm, but the pistons were changed, and the compression ratio was increased to 10.5. The VH41DE was fitted with an aluminum oil pan.

This block was covered with two aluminum heads with 4 valves per cylinder, which received redesigned round ports. These heads are equipped with hydrocompensators and a VTC intake camshaft timing system. The intake valves are 38mm in diameter and the exhaust valves are 33mm in diameter. Camshaft characteristics: phase 240/240, lift 9.35/9.0 mm. Unlike the VH45, the 4.1-liter motor uses a double-row timing chain. The VH41DE was fitted with 270 cc injectors, a different intake manifold and a new exhaust manifold. The American VH41 has a worse exhaust manifold than the Japanese one.

This motor was produced along with the related VH45DE.

The VH41DE engine was produced until 2001, then the 4.5 liter VK45DE took its place.

Problems and disadvantages of Nissan VH41 engines

Unlike the VH45DE, this motor was fitted with metal timing chain guides, hence their reliability increased and the problem with breakdowns was solved. Otherwise, the motor is as reliable and durable, you only need to monitor its condition, service, pour quality gasoline and no less quality oil.

Tuning the Nissan VH41DE engine

Atmospheric

You can do simple tuning in the form of installing 4-2-1 manifolds, 76mm exhaust, cold intake and chip tuning. This will add some power and enhance the sound of this V8. To get the engine back to its native 4.5 liters of displacement, you’ll need to buy a VH45DE crankshaft and pistons from it, the connecting rods can be left stock. All this together will give you about 320hp.
