Nissan VH45DE engine troubleshooting and repair

The VH45DE engine was introduced in 1989 on the Infiniti Q45, replacing the obsolete Y44. This motor is an aluminum cylinder block with a V8 configuration, 90° camber angle and cylinder diameter of 93 mm and height of 220.35 mm. The block features a forged crankshaft with 82.7mm piston stroke, 147mm long forged connecting rods, 32mm high pistons, and a compression ratio of 10.2 on the VH45.

The block is covered with two aluminum twin-shaft heads, equipped with a variable valve timing system on the intake camshafts and hydrocompensators. The diameter of the inlet valves is 38 mm, the exhaust valves 33 mm. Characteristics of camshafts: phase 248/248, lift 9.9/9.9 mm. A single-row chain is used in the timing drive, which is quite reliable. The VH45DE is equipped with 370 cc injectors.

Along with this engine, a 4.1 liter VH41DE was also produced.

Production of VH45DE continued until 2002, after which it was replaced by a new VK45DE.

Problems and disadvantages of Nissan VH45 engines

This is a pretty reliable motor, but some unpleasant little things are still present. The first is the plastic timing chain guides, which can break after 150-200 thousand kilometers. And since all cars with VH45 have long ago passed this milestone, then you need to periodically check the guides or replace them with metal ones. Also sometimes fail DMRV and detonation sensors.

All other engine faults and diseases are most often related to age. If you will pour normal gasoline, normal oil, regularly maintain the motor, there should be no problems with it.

Tuning the Nissan VH45DE engine

Atmospheric

To begin with, you can order a tuning control unit, buy spiders 4-1, straight-through exhaust on 76 mm pipe and cold intake, it will give 320-330 hp. Usually it is enough, because the engine has a lot of momentum, plus it will add a great sound. You can additionally remove power by resharpening the stock camshafts and adjusting the control unit. It is possible to squeeze a little more with the help of tuning intake manifold with a large throttle, as well as pistons under high compression ratio. In such an atmospheric version you can remove 400+ hp.

There are no turbo kits or compressor kits on sale, so for supercharging you will have to build a completely custom project, weld manifolds and spend a lot of money, but the result will not disappoint.
