The YD25DDDTi engine, produced at the Yokohama plant, was first introduced in 1998 and is still in active use today. This diesel inline 4-cylinder engine has a cast iron cylinder block and is equipped with four valves per cylinder for high performance and efficiency.

Main Features

The main geometric parameters of the engine include a cylinder bore of 89 mm and a piston stroke of 100 mm. The engine displacement is 2488 cc. Depending on the modification, the compression ratio varies from 15.0 to 18.0, allowing the engine to be adapted to different operating conditions and requirements.

Power and performance

The YD25DDDTi has several power options: from 133 to 190 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. Correspondingly, torque is also variable and can reach from 280 Nm at 1800 rpm to 450 Nm at 2000 rpm. These figures allow the engine to deliver high levels of traction and dynamics.

To enhance performance, the engine is equipped with various types of turbochargers including IHI RHF4H, Garrett GT1749V, Garrett GT2056V and BorgWarner BV45.

Oil and fuel

The YD25DDDTi’s performance figures include fuel consumption at 13.2 liters per 100 km in the city, 8.3 liters on the highway and 10.1 liters in the mixed cycle (data for Nissan Pathfinder). Allowed oil consumption is up to 500 grams per 1000 km, and it is recommended to use oils of different viscosities for the engine, such as 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 15W-50, 20W-40 and 20W-50. The engine oil capacity is 6.9 liters for pre-2007 models and 7.6 liters for later versions. It is recommended to change the oil every 20,000 km, although it is optimal to do it every 10,000 km to keep the engine in the best condition.

Cars with this engine

The YD25DDDTi has been fitted to various Nissan car models including Murano, Pathfinder, Bassara, Navara, NV350, Presage, Serena, Primastar, as well as Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro models. This makes it a versatile and popular choice for a multitude of vehicles, providing reliability and high performance.

Reliability and repair of the YD25DDDTi engine

YD25DDDTi engineThe production of the YD25 diesel engine began in mid-1998, and the first vehicle with it was the Nissan Presage. This motor replaced the CD20 and TD25 on some cars. The cylinder block here is in-line 4-cylinder, cast iron, with a cylinder diameter of 89 mm. Inside the block is a crankshaft with a stroke of 100 mm, and the length of connecting rods is 154.5 mm. All this gives 2.5 liters of working volume.

Covering the block is an aluminum head with two camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. The intake valves are 28mm in diameter, the exhaust valves are 26mm and the valve stem is 6mm thick.
This motor needs periodic adjustment of valve clearances, but it is recommended to do so if noises occur.

Valve clearances on a cold engine are as follows: intake 0.24-0.32 mm, exhaust 0.26-0.34 mm. Valve clearances on a hot engine: intake 0.29-0.37 mm, exhaust 0.33-0.41 mm.

The timing chain is used in the timing drive, it serves on average 250 thousand kilometers, sometimes more.

The first version of YD25DDTi diesel engine was with direct fuel injection and Bosch VP44 fuel injector, and Garrett GT1749V with intercooler was used as a turbocharger. The engine output was 150 hp at 4000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm.

Then, in 2001, YD25 with Common rail, with IHI RHF4H turbine and intercooler, compression ratio is 18 (instead of 17.5). Power of this engine is 133 hp at 4000 rpm, torque is 304 Nm at 2000 rpm. Cars with YD25DDTi with Common rail have the designation dCi.

Since 2005, the production of diesel engine YD25DDTi with a turbine Garrett GT2056V and compression ratio of 16.5 began. The output of the motor increased to 174 hp at 4000 rpm, and torque of 403 Nm at 2000 rpm. In 2007, this engine was converted to Euro-4, and the output dropped to 171 hp at 4000 rpm, while torque remained unchanged.
The version for rear-wheel drive Navara had a power of 144 hp at 4000 rpm.
In 2010, a Euro-5 version with a BorgWarner BV45 turbine and intercooler was introduced. Its power increased to 190 hp at 4000 rpm, and torque up to 450 Nm at 2000 rpm.

To increase the ecological class of the YD25 diesel engine, the system of exhaust gas recirculation EGR allows.

On the basis of this 2.5-liter engine in 1999 was released a younger brother YD22.
Production of this motor continues today, but, after some time, its place will be taken by the engine YS23DDDTT.

Problems and disadvantages of Nissan YD25DDDTi diesel engines

The YD25 motor, with proper care, regular maintenance and the use of quality oil and fuel, is quite reliable and trouble-free. The injectors here serve about 150 thousand kilometers, the turbine resource is more than 250-300 thousand kilometers, it is also good to systematically clean the EGR valve – soot accumulates quite quickly. With adequate care, the resource of YD25DDTi engine exceeds 300 thousand kilometers.

Chip tuning

A more evil firmware of the control unit allows you to get 210 hp on engines with 170 hp, while the torque will increase to 460-490 Nm. Motors with 190 hp show even better results: up to 230 hp and 520-540 Nm of torque.

The simplest versions with 133 hp are chipped to 160-165 hp, and the torque gain goes up to 60 Nm.
