Opel A17DTR 1.7 CDTi engine

1.7-liter diesel engine Opel A17DTR or LPL was produced from 2009 to 2012 at the concern’s plant in Poland and was put on such popular models as Zafira, Astra. This power unit was produced from 2006 to 2010 in EURO 4 version under the index Z17DTR.

This engine was installed in the following Opel models:

A17DTR engine problems and disadvantages

Despite its overall reliability, the engine has a few typical weaknesses:

1. Cooling system

  • Intolerance to low quality coolant.
  • Over time, antifreeze can damage the nozzle liners and heat exchanger gasket, resulting in leaks.

2. Turbine

The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) often requires replacement at 150-200k miles.

3. Particulate filter and EGR valve

Regular cleaning or replacement of the particulate filter and EGR valve is necessary to maintain stable operation.

4. Fuel System

Fuel equipment from Denso is considered reliable, but it is very expensive to repair.

The Opel A17DTR 1.7 CDTi engine combines excellent performance and moderate reliability, but requires careful maintenance. If properly maintained, it can last up to 340,000 km and even more.
