A17DTR engine problems and disadvantages
Despite its overall reliability, the engine has a few typical weaknesses:
1. Cooling system
- Intolerance to low quality coolant.
- Over time, antifreeze can damage the nozzle liners and heat exchanger gasket, resulting in leaks.
2. Turbine
The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) often requires replacement at 150-200k miles.
3. Particulate filter and EGR valve
Regular cleaning or replacement of the particulate filter and EGR valve is necessary to maintain stable operation.
4. Fuel System
Fuel equipment from Denso is considered reliable, but it is very expensive to repair.
The Opel A17DTR 1.7 CDTi engine combines excellent performance and moderate reliability, but requires careful maintenance. If properly maintained, it can last up to 340,000 km and even more.
