Opel C14NZ 1.4 engine

This engine was created in 1989 on the basis of the C16NZ and replaced the C13N and 13SB. In the cylinder block from the C16NZ, the cylinder bore was reduced to 77.6 mm, and a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 73.4 mm was installed inside. Rod length is 129.75, and piston compression height is 31.75 mm. Thanks to this, the displacement was reduced to 1.4 liters.

This motor was covered with a single-shaft 8-valve cylinder head, 2 valves per cylinder. It is close to the C16NZ, but has smaller combustion chambers and smaller valves. The intake valves are 33mm in diameter and the exhaust valves are 29mm in diameter. The camshaft specifications on the C14NZ are as follows: phase 250/257, lift 5.2/5.6 mm. The camshaft is rotated by a timing belt. The timing belt should be replaced after every 60 thousand kilometers. Unlike its larger counterpart C16NZ, the C14NZ motor bends valves.

The fuel supply system on C14NZ is typical for Opels of those years – mono injection. The ignition system uses a trampler. Multec IEFI-5 control unit is used here.

Production of this small motor continued until 1996, when it was superseded by the more modern X14XE.

Opel C14NZ engine problems and disadvantages

The C14NZ engine has its own weaknesses, which have become more noticeable with age:

  1. Ignition system problems: The main problem is loss of spark. It can be caused by the trampler cap, plugs or wires. Often the fault lies in the commutator.
  2. Wear of the timing belt: The timing belt is designed for 60,000 kilometers. If it breaks, the valves may bend.
  3. Failure of electronic sensors: Especially often fail lambda-probe, temperature sensors, idle speed regulator.
  4. Fuel pump and thermostat wear: The fuel pump in the tank and the thermostat have a limited service life.

Opel C14NZ engine tuning

You can raise the power of your motor by the same strategy that was applied to the C16NZ. But first you need to make 1.6 liters from 1.4 liters. For this purpose the block is turned for 79 mm piston from C16NZ, crankshaft and connecting rods from C16NZ are put. The block is covered with a head from C16NZ with intake system from the same. In the head installed camshaft 13S (phase 282/284, lift 6.0/6.0 mm), collector spider and straight pipe diameter 51 mm. To properly tune this motor, you need to transfer it to distributed fuel injection and put ECU January. This will significantly increase power, and the car will turn from absolutely uninflated to just slow.
