Opel Opel X16SZR engine repair
The X16SZ engine appeared in 1993 on the Astra and Vectra and replaced the old 1.6-liter C16NZ. In fact, the cylinder block remained the same: cast iron with a cylinder bore of 79 mm, internal stroke of the crankshaft 81.5 mm, connecting rods 129.75 mm, pistons 28.2 mm and compression ratio increased to 10.
The cylinder head here is 8-valve and similar to the C16NZ. The X16SZ used a non-start ignition system, a new Multec IEFI-6 control unit was also used, and the engine’s ecology complies with Euro-2 standards.
In 1996, this engine was replaced by the X16SZR. It differs from the X16SZ in wiring, electronics and control unit. Thanks to these innovations, its power increased to 75 hp.
The timing on both engines is belt driven. Replacement of the timing belt on X16SZR and Z16SZ is required every 60 thousand kilometers of mileage. When the belt breaks, both engines do not bend the valves.
It is also worth noting that these engines still use the old mono injection.
Based on the X16SZR, a 16-valve version was produced – X16XEL.
Production of the X16SZR engine ended in 2000, and in its place the more modern 8-valve Z16SE engine began to be produced.
Problems and disadvantages of Opel X16SZR engines
The most common problem is related to the EGR system, which over time becomes clogged and malfunctions occur. This problem is usually solved by getting the EGR valve to work and then plugging it. This will get rid of the combustion check.
Otherwise, there is nothing special: a classic old engine with exhausted resource, which can give any surprise at any time of day or night, which it does from time to time. To maximize the life of the X16SZR engine, it is necessary to change the engine oil regularly, use normal working fluids, monitor the condition of the engine, regularly and qualitatively maintain it. But usually the attitude to cheap cars is somewhat different.
Opel X16SZR engine tuning
Similar to its predecessor C16NZ, modification of the X16SZR engine requires too much fiddling with the transition from distributed injection to the January control unit, and this is just the beginning. In addition, the 8-valve cylinder head without exhaust is not adapted for high power, and replacing it with a 16-valve one is too expensive. It’s either weld on another engine or buy a more powerful one.
