Faults and repair of the engine Opel X18XE
This motor began to be installed on Opel cars in 1995 and replaced the 8-valve C18NZ. The X18XE engine was based on the 2-liter X20XEV, the cylinder diameter of which was reduced from 86 mm to 81.6 mm. The crankshaft and connecting rods remain unchanged. There are also no balancer shafts on the X18XE.
The cylinder head on the 1.8-liter X18XE is similar to the X20XEV – the same 16-valve cylinder head. The intake valve diameter on the X18XE is 32mm and the exhaust valve diameter is 29mm. On the inlet there is a VIS manifold with variable geometry, performance of standard injectors 204 cc. The exhaust uses everyone’s favorite EGR valve. This motor was equipped with hydrocompensators, so fans of adjusting valves will have to forget about their hobby.
Replacement of the timing belt on X18XE is required every 60 thousand kilometers of mileage. It should be treated very responsibly, otherwise the motor will bend the valves.
This power unit was installed until 2000, and since 1998 the successor in the person of X18XE1 began to be produced.
Problems and disadvantages of Opel X18XE engines
- Motor stalls, floating revs. See the idle speed regulator, it should be periodically cleaned or replaced. Also need to clean the crankcase gas ventilation.
- High fuel consumption, floating rpm. It is necessary to check the exhaust manifold, most likely there is a crack in it. This is a common problem on your engine. Welding the crack in most cases is pointless, you just need to buy a new manifold or a whole used one.
In addition, on the X18XE periodically dies DPRV, which entails dullness of the car at low speeds with a burning check and cutoff at 4500 rpm. The problem is solved by replacing the sensor with a normal original one.
All other problems and diseases of this 2-liter motor are caused by old age and wear and tear.
Tuning the Opel X18XE engine
Given the very close affinity between X18XE and X20XEV, some tuning tuners sharpen cylinders to 86 mm, under the pistons of X20XEV, to turn the motor into a 2-liter, and put the cylinder head gasket from X20XEV. But do not hurry to do such a thing, the wall thickness is very much reduced and also greatly reduces the life of the motor.
To get some power gain without a significant reduction in resource can be standard method: cold intake, direct exhaust, chip tuning. This will give a little extra horses, strengthen the sound and temporarily suppress the desire to tuning futile motors.
