Troubleshooting and repair of Opel Z14XEP engines
In August 2003, the Corsa C was first equipped with the Z14XEP engine, which replaced the Z14XE and the 8-valve Z16SE. Unlike its predecessor, which was a downsized X16XEL, the new motor belongs to another generation of GM motors, the Family 0. The Z14XEP is based on a cast iron block with 73.4 mm diameter cylinders, and an 80.6 mm crankshaft stands inside. This transformed the motor from a short-stroke motor to a long-stroke motor.
On top is a 16-valve cylinder head with two camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder. The intake valves are 28mm in diameter and the exhaust valves are 25mm. The valve stem diameter is 5 mm. There is no need to adjust the valves – the engine was equipped with hydrocompensators.
The camshafts are rotated by a single-row timing chain, its service life is designed for the entire life of the car. In practice, everything is not so good and the life of the timing chain is approximately +/- 150 thousand kilometers.
The main difference between XEP and conventional XE engines is the presence of Twinport intake manifold, which at low speeds closes half of the intake valves with flaps, which increases the flow rate and the car drives a little better. At high rpm, the flaps open up and the motor runs at full throttle. In addition, the Z14XEP was equipped with an electronic gas pedal and Bosch ME7.6.1/Bosch ME7.6.2 control unit.
Along with Z14XEP were produced more modest motors: 1.2-liter Z12XEP and 1.0-liter Z10XEP.
In 2010, this engine was removed from production and instead of it began to put A14XER.
Opel Z14XEP engine problems and disadvantages
- The knocking, runs like a diesel. In this motor, the noise is mainly a stretched timing chain (dyselite) or Twinport. In the case of the chain you need to replace it, usually its life is about 150+ thousand km, but can be less than 100 thousand km. If it is Twinport, you need to either look for the cause and try to repair it (or replace it) or fix the flaps in the open position and disconnect the system, but the ECU must be adjusted to work without Twinport.
- Does not drive, stalls, floating revs. Often the reason is a dirty EGR valve, it must be either cleaned or shut off.
In addition, these engines can leak oil through the oil pressure sensor, which is solved by replacing the sensor on the original. Otherwise, the motor is tolerable, the main thing in time and normally maintain it, use good oil and gasoline, as well as monitor the oil level. In such cases, the resource of Z14XEP can exceed 250-300 thousand kilometers.
Tuning the engine Z14XEP
Refining this motor does not make any sense, and you will just throw away your money. However, you can plug the EGR, remove the catalytic converter, put in a cold intake, and aggressively flash the ECU for all of this. In this case, there is a chance to get as much as 100 hp and dynamics almost like a standard Lada Priora. You can give the camshafts to resharpening, buy a better intake manifold, but it is expensive and will not give a significant increase, will only help to replace the car.
