The Peugeot EB2 engine, also known as HMX, is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder powertrain that first appeared in 2012. This engine was widely used on various PureTech 82 models. Currently, it is gradually being replaced by the updated EB2F engine. The EB2 engine has several modifications, such as EB2D, EB2FA, EB2FD and EB2FAD, each of which is characterized by certain technical improvements and customizations.

The EB2 1.2 PureTech 82 engine is a reliable and economical power unit that is used extensively on various car models, providing good performance and meeting modern environmental standards.
What’s up with the reliability of the Peugeot/Citroen 1.2 PureTech?”
During its short but rich history, the motor has taken part in several recall campaigns, where PSA concern engineers had to solve a number of critical malfunctions. The latest examples of this powertrain seem to be quite good. And yes, it should be said right away that the 1.2 PureTech turbo engines turned out much better, and do not have such serious problems on the mechanical part, as in the atmospherics.
Attachments
Serious faults with attachments on the engine 1.2 PureTech – no. That the throttle, that ignition coils – quite good. Neither has noticed oil starting to pressurize the seals. So let’s get right to the main headache of this motor.
Vacuum pump
As we mentioned above, the powertrain has been in several recalls, and one of them was related to the vacuum pump. It was decided to resort to the recall after a series of high-profile cases where a faulty pump caused the braking system to fail, provoking an accident.
In total, the pump was replaced on 370 thousand cars with turbo engines during the campaign. The cars rolled off the assembly line between March 2013 and April 2017.
GBZ
In the valve train – there are no hydrocompensators. Thermal clearances were adjusted back by the manufacturer, with the help of calibrated tappets. It’s doubtful that these engines will need thermal clearances adjusted anytime soon, but if you do run into this situation, you’ll have to work with a dipstick to measure the clearances, and then you’ll need to lift the camshafts. And only then, scrupulously calculate the dimensions and purchase the right pushrods.
Another important point: the intake manifold is integrated into the cylinder-head. Such an elegant solution managed to accelerate warming up, which is designed to save gasoline.
In practice, there are cases when the electrode broke off from the plug and damaged the surface of the cylinder.
Need a new cylinder head for a Citroen engine or a cylinder head for a Peugeot engine? There are many models waiting for you in the catalog, among which it is easy to find the right one.
G timing belt
At the beginning of the article, it was already mentioned that the belt is oil lubricated. Concern engineers argue this decision by the fact that lubrication reduces friction losses. And the less losses – the more economical and environmentally friendly the motor is.
But in reality everything turned out not so rosy. The same problem was found on EB2 as on Ford 1.0 Ecoboost engine: no matter how the belt is not lubricated, but friction is present, and dust accumulates in the lubricant due to friction. It is also worth remembering the degradation of the materials that make up the belt, accelerated by gasoline getting into the lubricating fluid. To be fair, this problem is more inherent in cars that are operated in urban conditions. Ah, yes, we should not forget that you need to change the oil every 20 thousand. The result is a very corrosive liquid in the sump. Dust obtained due to friction clogs the lubrication channels in the vacuum pump.
The situation could not be ignored for a long time, so in 2017 the belt was finalized. First of all, the changes concerned the material with which the back part of the belt is covered. Also changed and the rules of replacement, now it must be changed after 100 thousand (180 previously), or once every 6 years (10 years previously). In 2021 alone, 220 thousand belts were replaced at the expense of the concern.
Oil Buzz
Well, one more serious headache, which can be encountered when operating this motor – it is prohibitive oil burn. In neglected cases, it is 1 liter per 1000 km. And now let’s remember that the sump holds a little more than 3 liters. It is good that there is a classic oil dipstick, it is easy to check the oil level daily and refill if necessary.
The oil consumption can appear due to piston ring seizure, which appears due to driving on old oil. It should be changed every 10 thousand, but you can change it after 8 thousand. And most importantly, refilling fresh oil will not help to decoct the piston rings.
Oil pump
As you can understand from the above, the engine is easily and quickly contaminated with oil, from which the oil pump seriously suffers. Quite often you can see that the low pressure indicator of the lubricating fluid lights up, although the level is normal. In addition, the pressure may drop during hard braking, which is most noticeable when the lubricant level is low.
It is said that during the recall campaign, when the vacuum pump was changed, many car owners were replaced and oil pump. So, if you see your oil light come on too often, check the pump.
Crankshaft axial play
Literally from the first day of production, cars with the 1.2 PureTech started having problems with the crankshaft. Recommendations to check the backlash appeared back in 2014. Literally in 2 years since the release of the powertrain, PSA engineers began to realize that the appearance of backlash is only a matter of time.
According to the regulation, in the case when the backlash exceeds 0.5 mm – the motor must be replaced with a new one.
It is already known that the problem lies in the half-rings. Unfortunately, the management of PSA concern has not disclosed what exactly is wrong with them. But it is believed that it is a matter of low quality. The second option is an error in their installation on the assembly line.
The more the car is used with backlash – the stronger it is, it comes to the point that there are errors on phase adjusters. After that, absolutely at any moment, the timing belt slips. And what follows – everyone knows: pistons bend valves. And that’s just in the cylinder-head.
After the jump, in the pallet you can see out and deformed half-rings. As well as a luffing crankshaft.
And what is the saddest thing – there are no thrust half-rings on sale, so you will not be able to replace them yourself, until the moment when the jump happens. PSA believes that it is necessary to put a new cylinder block, or buy a new EB2.
